I would rather fail at something above my means, than to succeed at something  beneath my means

I am not real fond of doing this type of finish. I started with 600 grit wet after top coats. Pretty easy to sand thru the finish on any corners. Then 1500 wet. Next I got an automotive buffing pad H&L. the grit is imbedded in a foam like material keeping it wet you can get pretty aggressive with it still careful on the corners. Then 3-4 coats of paste wax.

Nice one Mike!!

The plan for today is to start a couple 2 piece TDs for my son and his buddy. They want to come up and build them so will get to see them several times this fall!!

I haven't done but a couple of these, will hard maple be enough for the I beam or is phenolic better?

I'm thinkin the maple is as strong as phenolic...

Big Jim might be one to ask that question to...  How many lbs are the bows gonna be?? That is a factor...

I made a shorter version of the limbs I built a few weeks ago... I am going to make a 60" string to fit the new limbs and then run her through the chrony...   She is 42.5 # and I am hoping to get 190 fps with 410 gr. arrow...

Wow Stic, that's a piece of art you made.
You are a brave man doing the power rub! I would be scared to do what you did on anything but a big flat surface. You ever tried rottenstone and oil rub?

Shredd

I think I already complimented you on another site...  Don't wanna give you too big of a head...

Oh, what the hell...  She looks Gorgeous Mike...  Good job...

Crooked Stic

I have heard of the rotten stone but never tried it. And yeah you got to check often and stop when the peel goes away.
Kenny what wood on the outsides ? Not an expert but would think phenolic is stronger. The maple should be fine with outer good wood if ya dont get carried away really high poundage.

Probably around 47ish on a 64" bow.  I'm thinkin bubinga for I beam also as it is stout...

Guys will be here today to pick riser woods and maybe glue em up...
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Made myself a proper card scraper holder from some Red Gum from an old railway sleeper and sharpened(?) up my current scraper last w/e - what a difference!!!! Easy curls from fine shavings through to ripping it off, I was amazed at how quickly it will take wood off with a bit of elbow grease and the proper angle.

This past w/e I made a shaving horse from scrap around home - re-cycled Red Gum sign for the seat and railway sleeper arms, prunings from our own Apple, Peach, Nectarine and some Wattle trimimngs from the folks place for the legs, footrest etc. I made up a higher clamp position to tackle full size staves in the future.

Feel a little like someone I heard talking about their own CNC mill and lathe - 'it's nice making new or fixing parts to fit the machine' - I can now take my time and make up some nice tight fighting pieces with ease and re-build or make another. Just need a bit of padding on the seat, my bony behind needs a bit of padding for comfort  :biglaugh:

Thats a nice looking horse you made  And all from free scrap, even better

Thanks guys, it's one of those things that I look back and say "why didn't I do this aaaaages ago?" as it makes it so much easier compared with a vice like I was using.

bigbob2

I opened up a surprise package today,
I spent my life 40 some years, working  wood, sanding and shaping, the weirder the more I liked working it,
shaping, sanding, and caressing It (whipping off the saw/sanding dust) then watching the weirdness POP as I put the finish on it,
putting my heart and soul into it, only to have my bosses sell it,,but that's life, and I done got paid well for it,
,
I almost got a woodie, when I saw the wood from Kenny,
Gorgeous Flaming Lines, Matched sets,
I can't wait to start Playing with it,
The bow limb package---get yr mind out of the gutter  :biglaugh:
This one stays Home, Until it gets willed to my daughter  Then her Daughter as a Family Heirloom

,
cheers
