Very nice Kenny! Mr. ****** is one lucky victim.

Got the bow rough tillered and peeled back the rest of the tape. Wow. Will probably have it shooting tomorrow.

I'm finally back in my shop and bows are being built. 😊
I'm taking a different tack and building two longbows. Both have bamboo backs and bellies and one has a hickory core, while the other has a yew core. The risers are made with zebra wood and padauk with accents of maple and wedge.
My original plan was to build a recurve, but work and other commitments have limited my shop time. I have three risers for recurves ready to go, so I will build one if I still have time. I just wanted to build a nice looking bow and a longbow is what I know best.

Nice, is that the BearPaw glass?

Bue - Yep, this is my first try with Bearpaw. I ordered the crystal clear from Kenny and so far I'm very happy with it. I'm gluing up two bows at the same time, and when I peeled back the tape last night, both looked truly crystal clear. I didn't notice a single streak in either, and I think this koa is dark enough they would have popped right out if present.

Ben- if you remove that tape you won't have to try so many times

Grooves are for better adhesion correct ? I haven't seen that done before.

LOL.
The cut grooves are just there to set the depth and allow me to chisel out the relief for the takedown.
The tape is a little more than 1/8" from the teeth.
I didn't snap a pic on this bow, but you can see how it's done on my 1st attempt.

I'm too squeamish to watch this.  :scared:

Well it looks like I'll be building some more limbs for my swap bow! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :goldtooth: came in the shop to this the other day. Glad it happened while I still had it. I know exactly what happened. While gluing in the overlays on the limb butts I used a clamp light light a heat lamp and put a towel over the light to hold in the heat and the light fell over and rested on the limb. It left a small burnt spot in that area which I was able to sand out. But I guess it compromised the glue joint. That's exactly where it failed.

Man that sux.
On the positive side, your riser is still beautiful and in tack.

OUCH, that is too baddy.

goobersan

That sucks Dannon  :banghead:  Glad the riser is okay

Lookin forward to building a 2-piece. Thanks Ben

That sucks. It's a nice bow. At least you can save the riser.
I glued up my bow last night. It came out pretty good except I missed weight. If anyone can draw it, you can use it to launch an arrow into orbit. It shows that I haven't been in my shop for too long. I can fix it, but it will require major surgery.
Good thing I have another riser and lams waiting to go.

Interested to see this bamboo back/belly bow Dave.  I've been wanting to try one.  Do you 'carbonize' the belly?
