Good day all,

I am 10 days out from having my second shoulder surgery.  This time it was my right shoulder.  Dr stated what Labrum I had left looked like swiss cheese.  Detached the bicep and reattached it else were.  I am 42 and both shoulders have been re-engineered.  I had a follow up with the surgeon today.  I will start PT on Friday.  I am not allowed to hike with a backpack yet and he wants me holding off on shooting a bow for another 4 weeks.  I am walking a 4.5 mile stint every day, just no pack on.

My motivation for recovery is that I have a 13-day hunt planned in Colorado for the two weeks of archery season.  This is a limited entry unit that I know I have enough points to draw an elk tag,  I should draw a mule deer tag ( last year it took 4 preference points to draw) and a black bear tag.  I have received my small game tag.  I have ordered the lightest poundage bow I have ever hunted with.  A 51lb at my 31.5 widow PCH.  My neighbor has offered to let me borrow a 66 " 26@28 bear recurve to start off with.  I will take him up on that.

Is there anyone else recovering from surgery and what is your motivation?

Going stir crazy at home.

I had to quit bow hunting due to nerve damage in my bow arm about 8 years ago. Sold all my stuff.
Then had ulner nerve and carpel tunnel surgery 2.5 years ago and now back in archery for almost a year.
Previous bows were 60 and 66@30". Now at 64 I'm shooting again but 44@30 and feel confident enough to kill anything in this country, except maybe grizz, but then again grizz an'it on my hit list or moose.

Take it easy coming back. You're still young and have plenty of time to heal and get stronger.

I am scheduled to see a surgeon this Monday for some knee work.  They suspect a torn miniscus.  Better than a replacement, I think.  They said I have lots of space between the bones.  I think that's good.  Good luck with the shoulder surgery.

still building back from surgery last fall - cleaned up a torn labrum and reattached the bicep tendon on my bow arm.  I'm back up to 55#- still a far cry from the heavy bows I used to shoot.
getting old is a pain in the butt

Last spring I had both knee joints replaced, the right on Mar19th and the left on April 30th.  On September 4th I departed for Bozeman, day-hiked around in Yellowstone for three days and then headed up to Big Timber for a 6-day elk hunt.  I was able to keep up with my guide and had a great time!  I didn't score on an elk but had 3 close calls.  I'm headed back this fall, God willing.

I will pass along the advice I got because it seamed to work for me.  Go into surgery light and strong.  Do the physical therapy like you MEAN it!  Four hours after I woke up after my first knee operation was completed the PTs came in and told me I had to take at least two steps on my knew knee.  I got up, put my weight on it.  It didn't hurt so I took those two steps.  When they told me I could get back in bead I told them that they could go to bed if they wanted but I was going to walk all the way to the door (of the hospital room).  I did it.  You can do it too!

Good luck!  Don't give up, don't give in.  When you get to feeling like it ain't worth it, reread the previous sentence.

I haven't had surgery this spring but had another serious surgery (not shoulders)  June 2017. I couldn't walk, talk or feed myself. My dexterity and balance was shot. Had to practice stacking soup cans leaning on a walker.
By October I was shooting deer.
Surgery on my eye last Nov. as soon as they said go I was out hunting/shooting.
Had knee surgery this past Sept. They told me to go up stairs butt first and pull the leg up. I walked up stairs like a man. A crippled man but I did it. Getting in a tree was tough but I did it too within days
Mind over matter bud. Once they give you the go ahead to be physical act like you're normal cause you are. If I can do it you can do it. Lot of the healing is mental. Don't overdue it but don't sis out either.
Id normally shoot a mid 60s bow. I had a time pulling back 42 at first but I kept trying now I'm back to my weight.  There's fellows that can't do anything anymore and would trade with you in a heartbeat. You're lucky and blessed. Go for it and get it.

Good healing as you move forward.  Having had both shoulders repaired in the past I feel your pain.  I have a moderate RC tear now but doing the therapy and training route.  So glad it wasn't a surgical situation.
