You might be referring to the Moose John. I'm not sure if that hunt is still being conducted.  But yes, lots of people still doing float hunts in general. Keep in mind that navigable rivers are like highways in Alaska. You will likely see other people.

When I floated Jay Massey's "Moose John" river years ago we didn't see a single soul for the 10 days we were on that river. We did see some other boats but not until we hit the big river and floated down to our take out spot.

Not what it once was for sure.  Lots of traffic on the waterways with both float and jet boats.  You will see other groups for sure.

That's why we use air taxis and hunt gravel bars or ridge tops.

Alaskans (resident hunters and outfitters) are some of the most creative people in the world when it comes to getting into the far-off backcountry. Every river with an accessible launch point is being hunted and floated (or boated). Some rivers are still not floated simply because there's no good way to get all the gear required (plus hunters) anywhere near them. Some rivers are too shallow for heavily loaded rafts. In all, the logistics of doing a float hunt aren't easy and become dramatically more difficult as you try to go where few others dare.

Moose hunting is my favorite.

I hope to get to the Yukon an Alaska someday. Float trip would be the way I would want to do it. 

It Would take some serious planning.

Right now, I will stay with my usual Moose hunting plans. Trying out a remote fly in this year and really looking forward to it.

My big expense would be getting there! I live on the other end of the country.

I am going again in September.  Crowds have not been a problem for us.  Really hope it stays that way.

I would love to talk to you about your plans Jason. 

I've done about a dozen moose hunting float trips by canoe on rivers that don't have big rapids where a raft would be better suited. Each person in the group has there own canoe and when a moose is killed half a moose is put in each canoe. Be sure to bring one more canoe than the number of moose you expect to kill. We killed two moose with only two canoes one time and it was dangerous trying to finish the float.
We have been successful in bringing home moose meat about half of the time.
One thing that improved success rates for us was to study topographic maps and spend time calling in likely areas, even spending several days in a very good spot. So, on a stretch of river that we could easily float in two days we spend a week.
The least successful way we have done it is to simply float down the river each day hoping to see or hear a moose. Calling from the boat while drifting is a low odds proposition as well. Moose have amazing hearing and can hear you from a very long distance. It might take them a couple hours to get to you. If you're calling while drifting you might be 4 or 5 miles away from where the moose is when it gets to where it heard you calling.
A real bonus is finding a great campsite in a good area to call. It makes it a pleasure to stay for a while and many times the moose can be called right to the campsite making for a short packing job to the boat!

Another PBS member and myself decided to do a fly in moose hunt. Great trip and he was scheduled to float the Moose John about 5 yrs ago for historical reasons but there was a plane crash just prior. I do not know if someone is floating that river now. Seems like the good float areas are controlled by outfitters.

That would be a dream hunt for me, any information and/or suggestions would be welcome.

I had a good friend do this just last year. They got moose and black bear.

I'm doing one with another PBS member in September. He's been doing them with great success. I'll let you know how it turns out!
