Folks, for those of you that have been to the Howard Hill Classic in June, there has been a BIG problem with gnats.

I really believe I have solved this problem for you.

At this year's Howard Hill Classic, I'll have bandanas and bug spray I'll give you free.

I've worn a bandana for years, while being out on the range all day putting out targets and never had gnats get in my face.

I spray the front of my bandana and the gnats stay away from my face.

If you spray you hat rim or cap bill it also works.

I believe vanilla (yes, the kind used in cooking) also keeps them away. Put in a bottle and mist or wipe on with your hands.  You'll smell good, too. :goldtooth:

I haven't had much luck with my Thermacell on gnats.   Maybe because I hunt mostly open stands in warm weather and the breeze limits the effectiveness.

Have your wife go to Victoria Secrets and pick up some perfume called Amber Romance. Gnats hate it! You will not smell manly but it works.

We got mosquitoes in the bottoms, gnats wherever you have to stand still, flies where ever you want to eat lunch, ticks in the woods, chiggers on the hillsides and a crotch hoppers everywhere else, at our shoots. The only things that seems to work for the whole works, except for the ticks, flies, chiggers and crotch hoppers is cigars.

When I was a range officer in S. FL, we used Skin So Soft, cut with some water and it worked well though had to be reapplied time to time. Inexpensive and harmless on the skin

In Minnesota they get what is affectionately called black flies.  They are not flies, they are a blood thirsty devil that is born in running water.  They fly around you a tormenting droves while three or four sneak in and chew troughs into the back of your neck and ears that fills with blood and then entire state's population comes hoarding in to drink blood out of the feeding troughs that are you.  A good full bug suit and a green cigar is the best long term, but your head net does not have a hole for your corn cob pipe stem to go through, they haven't thought of everything.  Canadian DEAT will hold them at bay for a short period.  Really, the trick with gnats and other such flying vampires is good bug dope in an oil base, a fresh drop or two, as often as needed.

I shoot in bibs with a trapdoor seat. With the trap open it keeps the gnats out of my face.

Let me say that as long as I have put on the HH Classic, and have been in the woods all day putting out targets, had no gnat problem.

Again, the bandanas will be given to those who might want one and I'll have the spray as well.

I have found that Repel does best.

Who wants to volunteer to help Charlie hang fly tape over his trap door?

I meant the active chemical and strength, I didn't mean the brand.

Tom, all I know that Repel contains 40% Deet.

I've encountered very heavy gnat populations in some areas. Im talking about non-biting gnats, the kind that fly around the face, not black-fly/ biting type gnats. I've tried every different strength of deet to deter them. Deet does not work for non-biting gnats.
Ive had the best results with Skin so soft.
For biting insects, deet is great, for face fliers deet doesn't do anything.

One shoot I attend in Northwest Pa has a bunch of gnats.

A guy told me last year to take a small fern branch and stick up under the side of your hat and they won't bother you.

It worked....

The Whittler

Be carful with Deet on your hands it can eat/dissolve steering wheels, bow handles, and just about anything you touch and that includes going to the bathroom. :scared:

Roy from Pa

Yup it can.

Was fishing in Canada onetime and couldn't understand where the black was coming from on my hands.

The deet was melting the grip on my fishing rod...

Tom, these are none biting gnats and Repel DOES work for me, my wife and others that have used it here.

Again, let me say, use what you want, I'm just trying to offer some free relief.
