As many of you know from my tree stand safety post, I have been stuck in a wheelchair for a while now, and am on week 5 of 6 sitting down! I am certainly looking forward to to getting up, moving, and most of all back in the woods.

Through this time, I have been thinking a lot about playing with more of a straight grip r/d D bow. I have always been a recurve or hybrid shooter, but want to play with one of these after the season is over and see what happens.

I have done a bit of research and have narrowed it down to either a 64" Toelke Super D or Robertson Tribal Styk/overdrive for my 28" draw (may be a little shorter with this style bow).

For those of you that have shot both, what are your likes and dislikes? Especially for someone who is just taking a interest in this style bow?

Ive never tried one of dicks newer longbows.   Ive had a mystic and a purist in the past.    I liked the purist quite a bit.   Im not sure if the form is different or just a name change.   they also have the "overdrive"  option  (more reflex).      the both will have the td bolt option if wanting a 2pc.     Never shot the toelke.

Personally Id probably go for the northern mist baraga i heard great things about them.   they also have a 2pc option, socket takedown i believe. 

i am going to aggravate you with my post, but i would strongly suggest you consider a Northern Mist Baraga. For me its my favorite mild R/D bow.

Cant help with the Toelke, I've never shot one...never seen one in person even, but I've always wanted to try a 64-66" Whip.

I been shooting an old Robertson Mystical for probably 10 years, had a Vision longbow back in '05. They haven't changed much at all over the years. They are my Gold Standard when it comes to the mild R/D variety. I've never had a bow that shoots where I'm looking like they do. They might not feel like the smoothest bow, they start out kind of heavy in the draw but come back smooth, lots of preload in the limbs. I'd like to get another but havent found a used one and cant come up with the $$ for a new one. The Northern Mist Superior is pretty darn close though.

The Super D is closer to a Hill style, a little reflex in limbs and straight through the handle.

I can't speak directly for the Primal, but I have owned two Super Ds.  The Super D is what Howard would have eventually morphed the Hill style into IMHO.  It is NOT a R/D bow, as it has NO deflex in it, only reflex in the outer third of the limbs.  It is whisper quiet, not a speed demon but no slouch, and it does have a pulse on the shot, but much gentler compared to your average Hill.  It is a super narrow riser and limb bow, rapier like, with tiny tips.  In the 40# range when I held one for the first time I almost thought it felt like a kids bow it was so darn slender and light.  The grip is not too small, it is somewhat rounded, and just enough to get a nice full grip, but it is not the deep oval/wedge of your average Hill.  The bow is exceedingly easy to shoot, very smooth, the 66 and 68 are extremely so.  It's just a fun damn bow either way, but a true R/D will give you a little extra performance and a little less pulse, again the D isn't bad less than a Hill but you do know you've shot it. 

For a true R/D that strings up in a nice crescent/D  my first choice would be a Mohawk Sparrowhawk, such a sweet shooting bow and a real longbows longbow.   The NM Superior or Baraga are also excellent, as is the Dwyer original.

Never shot the tribal but I do have a Super D and have owned a couple others. It is probably my favorite bow to shoot.  It's a natural pointer and slings an arrow pretty damn quick. Very light and smooth with very light recoil at the shot.

Dicks longbow is the primal styk. They are a wonderful longbow. My son Shoots one. I am not much of a longbow shooter but It is one of the few longbows that I feel comfortable shooting. Sorry can't help you with the Tolke.

Now if you want to talk one piece on recurves that's the tribal styk. I shoot one and couldn't be happier. Shoots like a dream.

There doest seem to be a lot of tribal styk shooters on here? I have heard great things of these bows in the past, and have always wanted to have Dick build me a bow. I have owned a Robertson curve and loved it.

With that being said I have never owned a Toelke either, and as already stated the Super D has a great reputation. Coming from really high performance bows however, do you guys think I would be better of with a more R/D like the Robertson or NM?

I had greatly considered Northern Mist as well.. probably a Superior. Does he offer more in the way of wood choices than he advertises? I am a bit of a wood snob unfortunately!

You are correct sir! I knew that and keep saying Tribal. I have shot the Tribal Styk and is indeed a sweet curve!

I've shot recurves all my life. Last year I went to a hybrid than a Primal Overdrive. Gotta be honest, the overdrive is faster than my Toelke Whip. I'd imagine a super D can't be faster than a whip.
Now a fellow I spoke to had both. Upon getting his one piece Primal Overdrive he put up his super D and sold it to get a 2 piece Primal Overdrive.
Personally I found the switch very easy. I actually like the feel of the Overdrive better than any recurve I've shot.

I just received a New Primal Overdrive Longbow last week from Dick, Myrtle and bocote beauty. Well made, and great feel in the hand. Slight locator grip. Cant seem to put it down. 62" Powerhouse. Is very forgiving on arrow spine/selection. Shot some 65-70 Laminated Birch arrows out of it last nite(bow is 53#), and you couldn't hear the bow. Dead quiet. pleasant little " bump" at the shot, but very smooth. Arrows go right where you look.
I have some nice Robertsons, including Wolfers, and CoyWolfs, and this Overdrive is a classic D shaped bow that I will carry proudly.
Ive owned Toelke's, and they are great shooting bows also, but they all seem to look the same to me...no individuality in woods, etc.
Either bow is a good choice, but I am sticking with my Robertsons.

I have had a Super D and currently have a Primal Styk overdrive and have another on the way.  Nothing wrong with the Super D but to me its just a forgettable bow.  The overdrive is much more of a looker and by far a better performer.  The overdrive loves a heavy arrow.
