Was deer hunting with my best friend Donald last week and an hour before daylight we leave camp. On the walk he was walking in my steps behind me in the dark. I was taking a step when I heard a little rattle before my foot hit the ground so I did a ninja one leg high jump off to the side. Donald was now the target and in his words did the fat boy jump-run to avoid the little critter. Now I'm wearing snake boots he is not his are sitting 100yds behind up in the camper. We get a light on and I put a blunt in its head and we move on to our hunting. So after the afternoon hunt ( Donald is now wearing his snake boots ) on my way back in the dark on the same dirt two track mind you. I'm about halfway to camp and in the track I see something but surely it a cow pie so I reach out with my boot to give it a test. Well it ain't no cow pie about a foot away it struck the toe of my boot then started rattling , he was super aggressive.
So I put a blunt in his head also , we also had killed one right next to camp right before I left for my elk hunt this year also. So in 7 years of hunting this place we have never killed a rattler now they are everywhere. So now I have 3 snakes in the freezer at deer camp and one in the freezer at home that I killed in my front pasture. So what do you do with 4 rattlesnakes.....

I have a friend of mine who gets the willies just looking at a picture of a snake.  I'll have to show him these lol.  We went to Twin Oaks and he wouldn't even walk by the self bows hanging up with the skins on them.

Very nice, Sam..

Had a friend get bit by a rattle snake a few months ago while 2.3 miles back in the woods alone hiking.

He made it to the road and was life flighted to a hospital.

Spent 2 weeks in the hospital on anti venom.

And 2 months in rehab to build his leg strength up.

Man I hate snakes. I love snakeskins on bows though!

Good outcome - they look good.  I would have been so "shook" I would have missed him 5 times!

Will get some pics of them on the bows once I get home..

Actually got both on the first shot and got the video on my hat camera...

Didn't realize that the venom could be that potent. I was under the impression that the Canebrake had the worst venom .. Again, I still think that the Taipan and the Manba are worse as they stalk the victim... just a city slicker talking. Thanks for sharing.

You can die from a rattlesnake bite...

starshooter

I am well aware of that. Only snakes I have encountered are the cottonmouths and the copperheads. My understanding is that they can put you in the hospital and can really destroy your body tissue . Just depends. Thanks!

Those limbs look awesome. Sam, besides fleshing and stretching, how else did you prepare those skins? Borax? I assume in such a short time, they weren't tanned.

I must be a wuss. Snakes, rats and spiders. Just can't deal with them.

Trumpkin the Dwarf

Those look great! How do the limbs behave with the extra weight of the skins on there now?

I can't tell if any speed was lost , I shoot pretty heavy arrows and the bows are super quiet. The quiet is all I worry about anyway , I'm willing to bet a large sum of money it won't be long until critters hit the ground...

No tanning on the skins just flesh and dry out , went with the dry skins and contact cement. It is a lot of work to do it right but I think worth it...
