I'm teaching some beginner bowyers to make their first bows. Hopefully, we'll end up with 5 or 6 bows after the first day. I'm not wanting to make flemish strings for all, and I don't know what length all these bows will pop out at. What can I use for temporary strings? A braided nylon? (I have a tilling string.)

Definitely not nylon...  West marine has some line that is 1/8" ...  I believe it is dyneema and is non stretch...  Or line for kite-boarding...  I am sure that you can order it online...

I just use this white nylon stuff I think its meant for heavy blinds.  A little serving and the plastic nocks fit well.  Tie a simple knot on each end to adjust the length and loop size and burn the ends with a lighter.

You could make Flemish strings with a bowyers knot for the bottom. Use them for tillering strings and cut to length when the bows are finished. I use only Flemish string with a bowyers knot on my bows.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!
