OK, I've settled on a design for the a lam grinder.  Here's the dilemma;  the two options are the drill press or the Rigid oscillating sander.

The Rigid is my preferred method but I'm wondering if the vertical oscillating motion will be a problem. Will it cause the materials to slip off of the sled?

I think rmorris is the fella who showed how to eliminate the oscillation. Maybe someone can help out with his tutorial

monterey

I remember seeing that but would rather keep the oscillation feature for the many other things I do with it.

Here is what I did - works pretty well.

The adjustable bar is a great idea.

monterey

Mitch, as you slide the lam through, does the sander want to lift it on the oscillating upstroke?

No, but you can't take too big of a bite.  Grind a little at a time.

Great design either way Monterey!
Thanks for sharing. Kinda answered my question about doing my own lams with what I have in the shop.

monterey

Going to do it on the Rigid.  I'll get some pics of it when done.

Made some progress.  It needs a pressure point at the infeed to prevent dips in the lam.

make your lams longer than needed- and trim the snipe off- or make a feather board- out of some scrap lumber

Thanks, Wayne.       that will be the project for today.

I tried something before I caught your link.  All out fine Goldberg design.  I'll take a picture before removing it. Good for a laugh.

I've been laughing since " posted February 26, 2016 04:08 PM  "    :)

I kin just see that first lam sailing across the street at 50 mph.... Ask me how I know....

monterey

Better across the street than into my car.   :)

I promise you, Roy, the laughs will get better.

Wind is blowing hard in the shop.  May be delay of game.

Well, Roy, when I become a retired hedge fund manager like you I might invest in such a device.

Here's something I'm going to abandon in favor of a featherboard.  Aspiring lam grinder builders should consider this an example of how not to do it.

necessity is the mother of invention?
good try- nothing to be embarrassed  about!
looks like some work went into your gizmo- you should see some of my failures!

monterey

Quite a bit of effort into it.  No loss and some insight gained.  I want to get going on a feather board but a bad cut on my right hand (washing a cleaver) sent me to the doc last night.  Nothing serious or permanent but difficult to work with for a while.

Also, it's supposed to snow in the shop today.   :)
