I would love to make a hill style selfbow. I did a search that gave frustrating results.Has any one done this lately?  Good dimensions for a hill style? Point me in the right direction?

thanks,
Scott

"Hunting The Hard Way" by Howard Hill has dimensions for a Hill style selfbow.

It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.

I've since rebuilt the handle. I hated that grip and had to change it. It now has a modern looking long bow pistol grip, laminated with ipe and hickory slats to match the limbs. The rest of the bow is unchanged. Its a real hammer and very well behaved. Just shot it last night.

Sounds nice, PD.  I've only made about 20 bows and I'm still looking for that perfect grip.  One thing I've found out is that the ones with the slimmest grips shoot the most consistent for me.  Hopefully I'll get it right on the next one.   :)

I believe dimensions for a self bow hill style is in one of the hill books.  It might be one of the old write pamphlets not John or Howards book itself.   I'll have to do a little digging, they are all sitting on my night stand.

The needed dimensions will vary greatly depending on your wood selection. Which is?

Flipped through hthw and the older pamphlet (Howard Hill archer adventures) i referred to and the write up is the same for dimensions.

I have a complete set of the longbow shooters digest, and a few other old mags, and remember a write up in it as well referring to Howard and selfbow dimensions.  Short of turning my hunting room upside down to find it, it may be awhile before i find it.   Though it does give me an excuse to finish filing the tbm and pa mags i have stacked up around the place lol.    Organization..... Whats that   ;)

I'd go 1.25" wide, 70" ntn for a 28" draw, 3" fades with a 4 or 5" grip depending on your hands. Temper the bow while adding 3" of full limb reflex. You'll love it.

bowberry

Why would you add reflex? how  would you do that? is the reflex in the handle area, but not near the ends(string nocks)?

does the back profile taper the whole way on a hill bow? (1 1/4" -> 1/2") kinda like a skinny pyramid bow? or do the limbs go straight for a while and then taper?

In "Hunting The Hard Way" the selfbow dimensions are 1 1/4" at the center for 4 1/2"(handle) then a straight taper to 1/2" tips. This is for a 6' bow.
