What determines the thickness of the wedges in take down limbs also what determines the length of the wedge

It would have to be the design of the bow. Of the dozen or so take down re-curve bows I have built, I always had the specs. for the wedges for each design.

The wedge has to be past the riser enuff to bend a little to relieve stress at riser end. I also use a power lam too. I dislike bows that have a noticeable hinge at riser(or wedge ) end. Should be much more durable too.

I use a .300" x 8.25" strait wedge (no flat for bolt)on my TD longbow . I know guys who go .250" but I haven't ventured that thin yet.

"Usually" the wedge is 4" past riser end. Hope that helps....

You mention (no flat for bolt) is it better that way.  I have made a few and prefer the flat when aligning the limbs for drilling.  I am new to this so I drill thru the limb and into the riser at the same time.

No it's not better that way, I just like the smoother limb profile look....   :cool:

Kenny, I use .25 for the wedge thickness. I also us a PL so the net thickness is probably around .300 like you mention.  I don't like fat wedges, or tips!

I would say limb pad angle and reflex or deflex
My limb pad angle is 7.5 degrees and over hang is 3 1/2" .036 per inch taper 6 1/2" long

I have only built a couple I go 7.0 degrees. Using a subtle reflex on the tips.

I use .250 flat on top and 8.25" long. If you go to thick the wege will not flex that much causing the intended working part to be non working.
