I pick up some really nice bubinga this spring and recently a couple of pieces of green glass. Since I haven't built myself a bow for a few years I thought I'd put one together. Here's what I have to work with- bubinga for the riser, bamboo core and the green glass.

That combo will look spectacular! The green glass will really set off the bubinga, great choice.

Thanks- I think it will look good with that combo- I'm shooting for a bow in the mid 50# range. I got the limbs ready for glue up- while I have the glue out I'll probably start on some mosaics for the riser.

There are a couple of ways to do them- when I have short scraps  do them this way...
I choose random widths of wood with contrasting colors- the blank above has bubinga, bamboo and chechem and is about 6" long and 2.25" wide after they are glued up I'll clean up the blank.

This is how it looks from the end before ripping the blanks on the table saw.

Once I've ripped the strips I cut the pieces to fit the glass or lam that will go on the out side of the mosaic.

Pieces with the backer lam- in this case some core tuff:

When I rip the pieces out I get them close on the thickness-then they are glued to the backer lam:

This is why I don't worry too much about the thickness- they get run through the drum sander which evens everything out:

The other side of the backer will be glued on at the same time the mosaic is glued into the riser. I think the backer lam helps keep the mosaic from cracking when it is glued on the riser if there are curves.

Another way to do your mosaics is to glue up an entire strip and then you don't have to piece it together- I"m usually working with left over short scraps so use the method above- here's a picture I got from my buddy Martin that show the other way..
