We had a good time making saw dust. Showed him how to make a Z splice.

Then he ground out some walnut lams. I think his pants got a little damp running the drum sander..  :)

And I guess he is ok..  :)

BenM

PBR??   Come on man!   Get some gloves on too

Roy from Pa

I gotta say, he is easy to train, and handles power tools very well... Fed him dinner, he played with the new puppy, and we headed off to the bow shop. Even showed him a bunch of deer coming into eat corn in the yard. Prolly the first deer he has seen in years..  :)

Roy from Pa

Ben, I've been told no gloves by the upper echelon and OSHA.. And don't act like ya don't like PBR..  :)  I mean that's what the boy brought.. Just couldn't tell him NO:)

Heck ya fun wif Roy's power tools....priceless

I find myself spending more time on the bowyer's bench because ya'll crack me up! The bow building is just a bonus...

But Dave and I had a blast tonight. I'm sure he will be back again.. I sharpened his pocket knife tonight too on a buffing wheel before he left. I'm betting in a day or two he will need stitches..   :)

LOL!

Dave is the "Traveling Archer".  I had dinner and a couple "good" beers with him last night during the first leg of his journey this week.

How's your shins Roy?  I told Dave to give you a good kick for me.

Y'all don't have to worry, I made it back.

I admit, I don't drink PBR very often. But it has it's place, and that place turns out to be Roy's. It seems like a waste to bring better beer when PBR is already a step up for him. Plus, it's not as bad now as it was when I was in college. Someone said they went back to the old recipe?

The concept of the z-splice isn't very difficult obviously. But I did get to learn how the experienced old codgers out there get a tight fit, and that was the secret I was looking for:

As for the sander, I brought a scrap of walnut with me that was otherwise destined for the wood stove. I ended up with 2 pair of good tapers and a pair of 0.020ish veneers. We'll see if they make a bow. It took a couple of passes before I could get Roy to stop messing me up.

He kept wanting to run one or two pieces through again without doing the whole set. After awhile he just stood back and held my beer. Didn't know grinding my own lams could be so rewarding, but PBR and someone else's sander sure helps!

Now, the highlight of the stop didn't get a picture. But that damned little puppy of Roy's is just the darnedest thing. She's a keeper.

Hey Dave - You might want to be careful using Roy's advice on z-splices.  He's posted some pics of his work on here before.

That's a mighty fine looking sander you've got Roy! Glad you boys had some fun, and even made good use of some of your time in the shop! Lol
Plant a fruit or nut tree today, and have good hunting tomorrow.

Yeah John, I think I saw that one over in the corner. But he blamed it on one of his less talented visitors. Guess I shoulda known better!

We all know it was the coors that turned that splice.  I wish 8 lived closer to Roybert.  His shop looks like a great place to kill some brain cells.
