Here's my take on doing a flared/footed riser. I was really influenced by Brush Wolf's build along. I think it is more or less the way he does it. So here goes!

You start with wood..     :D

From top to bottom: bloodwood, figured maple (for accent stripes), sappelle and bocote. Couldnt believe how much the bocote oxidized.

cut to size.

Here is my approach. I had my wife (a graphic designer), draw me a template that I later had cut out of plexiglass. The accent stripes are 0.140" thick.  I overlay it on the wood and use a paint pen to trace. The scratch lines show my boundaries and 14, 15 and 16" riser lengths.

Off to the bandsaw to cut between the lines...

Dry fit the parts....not too bad but plenty of light showing through.

I also had plexiglass templates made from the same file used for the template.  However, they are too thin to use as the actual sanding template for my RoboSander. I had to make plywood templates...

My brother-in-law turned me on to turner's tape. Really thin but strong double stick tape.

The wide templates are very sturdy and keep everything in line. The tape is the bomb...

The next dry fit was much better, no light shining through...

That's all I got done on Saturday. Won't get back to it until next week...

Talk about good timing! I'm gonna try a flared riser on my swap bow and been thinking about what steps where involved for the last couple of days! Thx bro!

Beach, you have any issues with that sander? I have one and for some reason if I over tighten it , I get a rounded profile and if it tighten it just enough to keep the drum straigh it slips while sanding.
Anyways , thanks for sharing I attempted this with my swap bow this weekend and failed!

Love it... I want to learn how to make one of these patterns to fit my bows

Beach, very nice can't wait to see how you finish this. Wondering where does one get plexiglass cut out like that,
A glass shop maybe. Like the idea.

Rich, Maybe you could explain what you did and how it failed. We can use this thread as a resource for folks trying to do it.

The Robosander has worked fine for me. I don't remember assembling it and haven't had it bulge as you describe. However it is not for hogging off a lot of wood. After I tape the piece to the template, I go to my Rigid edge/spindle sander and knock off as much as I can. I go easy and make light passes until the bearing at the bottom of the Robosander does not spin.

I think it is key to remove the thickness of the accents you plan to put in. If you only cut along a line and sand smooth it won't close tight.
