Ok gang. I have been trying to get this grip wrap down for a while now. I cannot for the life of me get my wrap to look like Fergusons bows or Harrison's. Can some kind soul please give me a pictorial or video on how to get the perfect wrap?

Here is what I'd like

This is what usually happens

Thanks

You need a thicker leather. Then sand the outside edge of your strip down to a razors edge. Glue it up and wrap tightly. Tuck your ends. And y ok ur done

Also, the ends of the leather strip need to be tapered so that you don't end up with such a large overlap at the start or finish of the wrap.

From what I read Harrison's wraps were tennis racket leather grips.

I've been googling those. Just ordered a black one to try

There used to be a build along. Have you done a search?

Pat,
I did some searches and found a couple , mostly how to do a seize wrap or whip end. Have yet to find one truly like how I see Harrison's wraps

Like a 45degrer cut or a long taper?
I'd say probably longer, but it also likely depends on the circumference of your grip.  Try making a pattern with paper or cheap cloth first.

I usually pre fit my leather and the angle is much steeper than 45 I just wrap and cut away anything that overlaps until I get to where I want my grip to end.

Starting this kind of wrap around is no problem, but when you come to the other end for the finish I cannot figure out how to tuck the loose end under and having it tightened up nicely.    :knothead:   Any ideas how it is done. Bue--.

also on the tapered ends, you can skive- or like you did the edges- the taper can be sanded to a feather end.

I have seen Zach Ferguson do it . With no effort. The leather was tapered on each end to a long point.

Thanks everyone.  Gonna incorporate these ideas. I'll post pics when I finally get it

i personally find that using this skiving tool for skiving the edges to a feather works best for me-
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Leather-Skiving-Knife-Osbourne-925/dp/B002W2BDV4
disposable blades- make sure you use it on a chunk of marble or granite- or even some thick glass, so that the blade does not gouge into the work top.
there are other skivers too- some that look like an old style razor- i ( and most saddlers) prefer these

they are available from tandy leather etc.
the sander works fine too, i just find the skiver easier and more accurate leaving a very clean edge
