We finally have some temperatures that make it easier to work in the uheated barn. I got started on a bow oven/hot box (not sure which name is correct) this morning. Gearing up to make my first glass bow. Wish me luck. I'll have to order some supplies real soon.

The horn is cut and drilled..the holes might need a bit more material removed..

The arrowheads are not quite done..one more pass and notches...then they will be good to go...

Although the temperatures here are relatively warm compared to what so many of you have been experiencing, today was terrific! And I had time to work on my trade bow. Shaped the boo to profile and glued the bow up with a little Perry reflex. Hopefully the weather will be nice Wednesday so I ca take it out of the clams and get a bow shape started.

$;(?!"@&, sorry it's taken so long but I don't like working wood in damp, cold conditions. Shouldn't take long now.

kennym

Red, forgive me for sounding like Roy, but do you use a pressure strip with clams ?

And how do you get em lined up along the bow and get em all to close at the same time?  :goldtooth:
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Today was awesome weather no doubt!  I believe there just might be and end to the cold after all.

That's funny right there!

red hill

No, Kenny, I don't use a pressure strip and the clamps are closed one at a time.

This time I used Roy's  toothpick trick to get the backing aligned with the center line on the Osage.  I liked how that worked out, too.

I usually draw the lay out on the Osage and glue on small pieces of scrap wood that the backing fits into for glue up.

David Flanrey

Kenny has only been retired from his part time job a few days and already taking up Roy's bad habits.
  :nono:    :nono:

Red just what kind of clams you all got down there in LA?

red hill

I certainly missed that one, LOL!  This I-pad is too small for my bifocals!

David, we have a strain of inbred freshwater mussels. Everybody knows how common marrying inside the family is in Arkansas, don't cha know?!    :scared:

Got some work done on a couple different riser strips tonight.  Not for sure which to use or to even use either of them.  Heres a few pictures of them.  The riser is walnut and one set of strips is maple/osage/maple and the other is maple/walnut/maple.  Which do you all think.  The osage is really hard to see in the pics but I promise its bright yellow between the maple.  I put tape on the walnut block to give a idea on shape.

Here's one of each.  Its hard to see the osage in the picture but it stands out in person.

They are still roughed shaped.  Just cut the radius' out with a band saw and clamped them together to see how they looked.  They still have to be sanded down to get a nice curve.  Its hard to tell much from the pictures.

timbermoose

my vote is for the walnut strip. but i'll take either.  ;)
