I shall always be jealous of you selfbow guys. Those staves look nice. How hard is the black locust to work with. I have a piece from a carpenter friend of mine. I was first thinking of a self bow, but then cutting some lams for a few tri-lam bows may be a safer course.

I haven't done a black locust bow yet myself but i hear it can be finicky and prone to fret.  Thats why its candidate #3.  Id like to have one of something under my belt before i send it to someone else... So that leaves osage and hickory.  I have some hickory staves to fall back on... But id really like to send ***** a yella stick.

Dave, mine split right off the bow, 1/4 inch stayed on the bow and the rest just split like it was hit with an axe.

That's pretty scary Roy. If I decide to try it, I'll take precautions.

David,I have the veneers glued up, just don't have em sliced to grind. Been busy tryin to get a new table saw hooked up. Got wire run, saw together, dust collection hooked up, just need to get my bud over here to properly hook the 220 up while I clean that nasty grease off the table, and I'll be back up and goin!!

Dave, a buddy of mine used mahogany for a riser and it split just like Roy was saying.  It seems to be pretty brittle.

Those spliced veneers are sweet!!!!

You selfbow guys always amaze me.  I just can't see how you guys can make just sweet bows out of a piece of wood that looks like if you threw it it would come back to you..lol

That's it then. Mahogany is out. Too bad, I have a good big board in my shop right now.

If we all want to talk about what we  want, then I guess I can be a bit less cryptic.   I'd stated I'd take anything, and I will, but I tend to need a larger grip for the size of my hands.  I can shoot anything, but I'm letting the builder pick the style since my draw is outsized.  Only styles I know that easily accommodated that draw are kyudo, Asian horse bows, and my cable-backed board bow (of which I sorely need to build another, that thing shoots so beautifully.)

I've also never worried about aesthetics for myself-I really don't care if it's made of eleventy-four woods all arranged in a mosaic of a bald eagle being ridden by Abraham Lincoln, I care if it sticks out like a sore thumb in the woods and if I can pull it back to shoot it.  Spray-painted PVC has served me very well in the past, and I do figure it will again in the future.

Speaking of, should I build a cable-backed bow, since I know them pretty well?  My target has a high requested draw weight and I think it would be excellent insurance against sudden ERC death syndrome.  Even with a hickory backing, since the cables will take some of the tension.

You know back when I was a kid we didn't have the internet. Heck ,I remember having just 2 TV channels. But the one thing we did have was Christmas catalogs. As a first timer in the TG bow swap, it feels like I'm back in the 60's thumbing through topics like they are Christmas catalogs gleening info on my prospective archer. I remember putting a lot of gift wrapped boxes inside one after another so they could not figure out what their gift was under the tree.

Yah, I know I took a lot of words to just say "I think I know what he would like."

I will start a bowyers log, blog for short on Sunday. Come by and give me some support, advise, tips words of wisdom and encouragement.

awesome veneers and some great staves. some brilliant bows gonna come out of that lot!

I have not seen too many yew bows, or at least it seems that way, i could be mistaken.
The chunk of yew that is on the bench now comes from an Oregon bowyer in the late 30's. The wood was cut around that time and spent nearly 60 yrs in a barn before it was given to me.  One thick rough cut board, 3 x 12 x 5ft...a couple of slats should be doable...
I am thinking classic profile, bamboo backed, left or right handed...maybe horn nocks...

Eric, you'll have to come up here and get it. It'll cost too much to mail. It's 8 feet long, 18 inches wide and 1 1/4 inches thick. I bought it along with a 20 inch board for a couple of taxidermy bases I'm building.
I warming up the freezer so I can go do some work on my plan A and B bows right now.
Kenny, you can't just tell us you bought a new saw and not show us. It's just not right.    :(
