so building my first kenny m
64"... 50# @29.5"
i have a nice piece of black walnut for the handle,
do i need to reinforce the handle area?
i have some phenolic and some extra brown glass.
what would be better- or is the difference negligible - i thought maybe two separate accent stripes running through the handle.
only built a few of these glass bows- so really need some advice
thanks!

I'd run the two accent strip through the handle...

For walnut.  Yes I would reinforce with glass or phenolic.

one more question pleeze
if i use veneers on top of the lams, and adjust the lam sizes accordingly- will the extra two veneers and their glue lines have any effect on the bow?
does that question make sense??

would an i beam out of ipe, hickory or maple help?
and if so what thickness of i beam?

thanks again

kennym

Hi Wayne,

I use 4 wood lams in mine, if 2 veneers and you aren't going way heavy, just thicken up the other tapers to make your stack.

I use at least 3/8" I-beam because I don't like to offset it and I don't like to get close to cutting it in the site window.

Does that answer make any sense?  :)

thanks guys,
the veneers are 0.020 should i still just thicken up the two tapers to meet the required stack- or would i be better off  with 6 "layers" in the layup, made to match the stack- or would it not make a noticable difference either way
i dont mind the extra work and hassle
thanks

kennym

I see no point in going more than 5 total, and  that's if the tapers  will be too thick with just them and veneers.

You have to be able to bend the .001 up the belly ramps. That said, I once used a .100 x .001t on the belly ramps and got a good glue line...  :scared:

o.k. so if i use just one parallel, two tapers and two veneers, where should i put the parallel.     :notworthy:

so i guess you dont cut your shelf to center then, Kenny- you stay at least 3/16 away from center??
thanks

I run the thinnest lam up the belly ramp- which ever butt end is thinnest. Haven't seen a difference with the parallel on the back or belly.
