New to picture posting...but it's the pic of the  bow in the initial tiller stage. The other pics are of a different bow I made. This is 70 ntn. Shooting for 50# at 29. It is pulling 45# at 24" with the 550 cord. It has about 7-8" of downward tip movement so far. What needs to come off? And where? All help and criticism appreciated. It's a flat bow made of red oak. Thanks.

Copy and paste the IMG code for you pictures to post. It will be the bottom one from the drop down window beside your picture.

Bending way too much near the fades. Scrape from midlimb out on both limbs. Right limb is more severe. Those hinges will either fail or take alot of set or both.

Thanks Sam for posting the image. I am using my android phone and I'll get it worked out eventually. It's pretty cool to see that you are on tradgang. You kinda got me started at this hobby. LittleBen..are you referring to the other bow...not the one Sam posted? What do I need to do on the above shown bow? Thanks. Again..sorry for screwing up on the pics. I would have fixed it earlier but I have the army guard drill thing going this weekend... which is distracting me from my bowyerism!

Oh..one more thing I gotta tell you guys. I've been thinking about painting this baby a pink real tree. My old lady doesn't even shoot bows. But I'm trying to change that. So..I know y'all see the flowers and everything in the background... just keep in mind that the wife lives there too...and all my bows won't be pink real tree! I'll try to put some beer in the background for good luck soon.

LittleBen

Yes I was. Didnt realize they were two different bows. My apologies on that one.

I'd say you seem to be ok on that one. maybe a little tiny bit stiff midlimb out. Kinda hard to tellas it's not drawn too far. Alot of the time I use my hands on the limbs, I think you can feel the bend better than see it.

If you dont already have a tillering gizmo you might wanna knowck one out real quick and put it to work in that board bow.

Looks like it is time for a short string, with an in or two of brace.

Hello gang. Thanks Eric and littleben for the suggestions. I took a bit of wood off the bow from mid to outer limb. Then I braced her between 1 and 2. Hard to say because riser is thick still. She's pulling 40# at 20". I like the weight so far. If I can get 50# I'll be happy. She's bending about 9-10" total now. What do I do next? Should I move to high brace yet or take off wood and pull her a bit further? Gonna make a gizmo soon..but just using a little block so far.

LittleBen

Right limb looks pretty good to move forward. The left limb looks stiffer. I'd work on the left limb a few scrapes.

What length is the bow and what draw length are you going for?

40#@20" is probably 65# @ 28" so you've got plenty of wood to work with as long as you take it slowly.

Scrape that left limb to even them up and then once they're evened up you can take a few scrapes off each to bring the weight down a bit, and go to a brace of 4" or 5" or so.

OK littleben. Sounds good. The bow is 72". It's 70 ntn. It may be a bit heavy for the wife. But I still want to attempt atleast 50#. I still want it to pull 29" too although that will be a couple inches too long for her. Today was one of those days where I didn't make much progress. I had too much going on and didn't get to work on it much. Thanks again. I'll have updates tomorrow.

The above link shows the latest progress. She's pulling 44# at 23" now. She's braced at about 2.5". I've had a hard time getting both limbs symmetrical. The right tip bends downward a bit more than the left. But they both bend down 11". The limb tip on the right is thicker toward the tip. So if I thin it then it will bend even more. I don't think I need that. It kind of looks to me like that same limb needs work around the fades. And maybe both limbs do. OK. I'm finished rambling. Now I'm open for suggestions. Should I go to full brace or fix it first? Thanks...as always!

RedMan37

I got a bit more done. Left limb is still stiff and right limb has a slight hinge on the outer third. Would someone tell me what my next steps should be? It's pulling 45# at 25" now. Looks like this is gonna be about 45# when totally sanded and shot in. I need to get 29" draw. It's braced at 6" at this point.

takefive

I'm no expert at this, but I would brace it at 25" and run the gizmo over it.  That will tell you where you are stiff on your left limb and hopefully help you get rid of the hinge on your right one.  You can leave the last 6" of your tips stiff.  Good news is that you still have some cushion to make the weight you're trying for.
It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.
