I was goofing with a belly split off a piece of mulberry and built a bow. The piece had a mess of longitudinal cracks but the bow shoots great so I wrapped the areas (several up and down the bow) with sinew. I've got some bear fat and wanted to try and us it but will it effect the sinew wraps???

Second ...  what's a good ratio bear fat to wax?

Not sure about the ratio, but the fat shouldn't harm it( I think).

I used hand rubbed bear fat on a yew bow with good results but it was not over sinew. I assume that the Native Americans used bear fat to seal bows  so I would also assume it would be compatable with the sinew.
Kip, I think it would depend on the consistance you wanted as to what ratio of fat to bees wax you wanted.

Thanks Pat....  This little belly split actually turned into a shooter but it had a mess of cracks so I wrapped them with sinew. I applied some to the bow so I guess we are going to find out if it messes with the sinew???

The little bow is kind of ugly but wants to shoot   :)

if'n i know what i have seen of yer bows- it will be great.
besides- thats not ugly- thats self imposed character.
do you think some aboriginal bow builder would have looked for some snakey, challenging piece of wood to make a bow out of- heck no- he would have chosen the easiest piece he could find.
in fact if someone offered him a gun, he would have gladly put his bow down- its only us crazies that impose all this terror, pain, hardship and anguish upon ourselves to build bows outa crazy bent and twisted woods-

SHOW US YER BOW!!!
