Its IPE as far as I know, my first time working with it. I could wrap some cordage on it and glue it or try the Torges method but there is not much thickness to work with so on to the next plan.

Already have a few other bows laid out. Gluing a handle on a pignut hickory board today.

LittleBen

The torges patch doesn't require much thickness because the patch just replaces the damaged area.
I don't have a link to it but you can search it ... but basically you grind out the bad section of the belly with a spindle sander or similar, then make a 'plug' to fill the rounded groove your just ground out of the belly and epoxy that thing in with some smooth-on or other gap filling bow building glue liek urac185 (unibond800)

Cordage wrap will not work because it will not replace the compression strength of the wood.

SportHunter

I'll give it a try at a later date since I can use the experience and I already have a handy bow ready to try the repair on...     :knothead:

Just glued up #2. Cut it to profile tomorrow, pignut hickory flatbow with walnut & oak handle.

...and cutting out #3 as a backup, Hackberry.

LittleBen

Throw some photos up here, lets see some progress!

I always like a good hickory board bow, and as far as I'm concerned walnut is like bacon ... you can add it to anything and make it better ...

I feel for you Sport. I had my hickory bow go south on me the other day, did some real weird stuff. Now I have a belly split that I am flattening ready for backing and getting some handle material ready for glue up. if this one doesn't work, not sure what the next one will be. Just keep my fingers crossed. Off to the workshop.

I feel your pain, Sport! Working on my fourth bow at present.
This afternoon I got it strung to a higher brace and tillered to53 lbs at 25" draw. I even shot a half dozen arrows through it!
This one is boo backed Osage with Osage tip overlays. It has a positive tiller of 1/8" .
I don't have a boo backed bow for myself. I think I'll make one for myself after the swap is completed.
"*******, it looks as if this one might make it your way soon!   :bigsmyl:

LittleBen

Hope that osage is coming to me! never had any osage bow ..... I only draw 25" so you can just stop there snd ship! lol

Hope it all comes together for you guys.

SportHunter

All right, got the tiller to 27" pulling 53#. Put a couple dozen shots through her and everything is looking good. Should finish tillering tomorrow and start sanding.

My computer has died so I'm using an I pad. May try taking pics with this thing tomorrow and see how it works out.

Anyway, ************, your bow is shooting well and will be on its way soon!

red hill

Guess I'm the early bird today!

My trade bow is now tillered to the desired 28" and is still pulling 53#.

Now I get to shoot it a lot and put some elbow grease into a few sheets of sand paper.

I'm gonna try to put a beaver tail handle wrap on it and I have beaver fur string silencers as well.  Do ya'll reckon ************ will like all of that?

A few days ago I promised to get some pics up of a wonderful Osage self bow made for me by L. Bullington.

Here are some pics.

I'm amazed at the way this bow returns with barely a hint of string follow when unstrung.  Really nicely tillered and shaped.  Would that I could make such a bow (sigh).

My grand son already has his eye on it!!

"hey grampa, is it ok if I shoot that new yellow bow?"  :)
