are you guys pre sanding the tapers on those before glueing them on, or sanding the fade in after glueing on- or a bit of both???

I put about a 45 degree angle on the bottom piece- I don't worry about the others- they all get tapered once I start shaping the nicks.

Is there a special tool that makes cutting in the nock a bit cleaner and easier once is roughed in?

I sometimes pre taper and sometimes not. Just be careful and either way works well.

I use a good chainsaw file for nock grooves.

Not a great picture but this is one of mine.  Less pointy and more rounded, the way I like them.  Less mass in the tips.
