Anyone know where I can get some Mammoth ivory for longbow tips? Thanks, Bob

Ivory was used on old piano keys, I have seen them offered on some aucton sites.

Chris Cade(Mechslasher) uses it for knife scales. I believe he gets it on e***. Send Chris a PM. I'm sure he will tell you where he gets it from.

Ivory is very hard to find in canada. Believe me I've been trying for the last year to get some. It's illegal to ship into and anywhere within Canada.

Mammoth ivory is legal everywhere I believe. The mammoths were endangered thousands of years ago and now that they are extinct you can use all the mammoth ivory you can find.

Look for "fossil knife scales" on eb**, they seem to think that mammoths are endangered, so they don't let sellers list it as mammoth anymore.  Also Charles Turnage sells it, that's where I get mine from.  Google fine turnage and you'll find him.  I'll look through my cache and see if I have any laying around, too.

Also do a search for Tagua Nut or vegetable Ivory.  1 Nut will cost about 2 bucks, and will give you plenty of material if you are just using it for tips.

Do a search for ivory or antlers. Several months ago I found a website that had mammoth ivory, but I can't remember the site. They also had norwhale ivory.

Ask on the knife forum here, many of the bladesmiths will know of a source or have some pieces that are too small for their knifes.

There are shops here (Alaska) that have mammoth tusks for sale, but they are generally large, expensive, and not necessarily something you would want to cut into pieces.  I will look around and see if anyone sells smaller pieces that would be suitable for bow tips.

Wow, thanks for the help!! I am sure I will be able to find some with all these ideas. Mammoth ivory is legal to use here in Canada. They find it in placer mines in the Yukon and other similar places and since they are extinct its legal to use it.  Bob

I had a knife builder order a bow and we got to talking about Mammoth ivory.  He had used it in several knives and had it dry out and flake.  When he uses it now it's been through a stabilization process.  Sorry I don't know more about it but he did not recomend it for bow tips unless I wanted the bow back. He got the knives back for repair.

Pre banned ivory is still available at what I consider a reasonable price here in the US.  Don't know about Canada.
