Can someone point me in the direction of some good Shave Horse Plans or a Build-a-long.

I'm looking to use store bought lumber and make something simple and cheap.

You should be able to find all kinds of plans on the internet.

Do a search on the Stave master and look at Keenans bowyer bench.

Keenan's Stave Master bench is the Rolls Royce of bow benches!!!
 There may be a build along here on TG and I'm pretty sure there is one or two on PA. I got my pland from an old PA Magazine years ago.

I kinda miss that old shop... made a pile of bows in there.

Made a couple bows myself in that old shop:) Even made my very first bow in that shop...

Thanks to tenbrook for posting these and Grey for providing them.Into glass bows now but hope to try self bows in the future. These look like far to good of plans to pass up. Got my copy.

I'm about half way through this project and have a question.

The plans above call for the use of pressure treated lumber.  I went to Home Depot yesterday and bought pressure treated lumber (the brown stuff).  

Today a friend of mine stops by and tells me I'm crazy to use pressure treated lumber on a project like this.  Said its dangerous to touch.

Is this true?

If yes, why do they tell you to use pressure treated lumber in the article?

Any input would be very welcome.  I'm about to start all over and am very frustrated.

       I had once heard that the old pressure treat was treated with something containing arsenic. Don't believe there was a problem with touching it but a splinter could cause problems. They tell me the green treat stuff is safe. I am sure someone who knows more than I will reply..

I'd say you'll be fine with the pressure treated lumber today.  I wouldn't burn it in a fire and stand around and breathe the fumes, as for sitting on it and working, you'll be fine.  Go for it and take lots of pics when you're done!

My first simple one is made of pt lumber but I have a seat cushion and dont realy touch the wood much.  When I make my version of the above horse it will not be of PT. I dont leave mine outside so no need for pt and all the toxins in it.  I think you would be fine like I said you dont realy touch it that much.

The old PT lumber had arsenic in it. The new stuff doesn't. Still not good to eat lunch off the wood or burn it and stand in the smoke. But your butt will be fine on it.
When I made mine I used regular lumber due to cost and the fact that I couldn't find all the dimensions in PT lumber. I don't leave the bench out in the elements so no worries.

Its too little since you haveto already started your horse, but the plans for the one I use can be found by searching The Bowlers Bench for "shaving horse plans".  Sorry, I don't know how to reference the thread within a post.

You don't have to use pressure treated lumber if you don't want to. I used it initially because it was cheaper at that time than the untreated stuff. I know guys who've made them with untreated doug fir, cherry, etc.
