This vice has seen one too many osage staves.

There is something so satisfying with breaking tools from good honest use.

I don't care if its breaking a fishing rod on a big ole fish, or wearing out a gun barrel from shooting it so often, or an old case knife that has been sharpened and used so much there's very little metal left.

Now, it sucks breaking tools because of misuse, carelessness, or just stupidity.

That's too bad. But I think you got your use out of it.

Joe you might be able to use a c clamp to hold the stave on the vise that is still attached to the bench.
But that is a bummer don't know if you can just replace the pieces that snapped or not.

If that vise is one of the good old American made ones I am surprised it broke. I broke two Chinese ones before I got off my wallet and bought an American made one, no more problems.

Joe, I broke 3 of those little red vices over the years. They all broke trying to hog off the bark and sapwood on osage staves. I finally bought a bigger, heavier vice(this one is gray) from Lowe's and haven't looked back!  I'm sure the color makes the difference! d;^)

Does any place carry that size threaded rod? You might be able to replace it if you could find the same size thread.

But all I can say is you need to stop working so hard Joe. Give your poor old vice a break once in awhile.

Never thought about a warranty,,, good idea John.

But I went to the flea market and found another one for 15 bucks. It's a "Pony"......



So,,, I'll rig it up like the old one.

Remove the original metal grip plates and replace them with some leather that wont mar the wood as bad.
The original plates fit in an off set atop the jaws of the vise. Cut the 1st peice of leather to fit and fill the off set on the jaws of the vise. The original screws are used to hold the leather fill peices in place.




Then, I cut two more leather pieces to cover the screw heads and to provide the jaws of the vise a bit of a softer grip for wood work.
To glue the two final peices to the leather already mounted on the jaws, I use  a glue that remains pliable when cured. This "lock-tite, no mess" stuff works well.




A little grease on the screw.



Line everything where ya want it and clamp down a piece of osage slat until the glue dries.



Now I'm in like Earl Flynn!
