I found the motherlode of 6" straight as an arrow Shag bark. I found this while hauling out the hickory. I cut a pole and brought it out. What is it? Its from the Central Michigan area.

The one on left is hickory, the other could be a tulip...
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Is it worth a bow? Oops, I forgot to mention its the chunk on the right. The one on the left is certainly hickory, I found all I will ever need/want.

Roy from Pa

Sure is bow worthy, Mongolian Tulip wood is excellent bow wood.

one on the Left for sure hickory but the one on the right looks like a tulip tree to me, probably mongolian. It'll Make a great bow.

I'm glad you all identified that because I've got a whole slew of them around here along the river. Is it fairly easy to work like Osage or is it challenging to work with? Sapwood on or off?
I'm curious cause I'm going to start looking for other woods to build some bows for myself out of sometime in the future.

I actually always thought that was Buckeye? Which isn't a good hardwood in my opinion, but I'm glad you all made the correct ID on it.

Thats good news. I have a huge amount of both hickory and tulip to gather up then. Thanks for the good info guys. Chris I have to find other woods because my area is void of osage. I can get any kind of whitewood I want in unlimited qtys. Im peeling and sealing both staves. I will let you know how the tulip works out.

I just split and peeled 4 very nice knot free staves. The bark and sapwood came off in a flash and the log split very easily. Now the waiting............

SEMO_HUNTER

Pics? I wanna see what the inside of that stuff looks like. I know I've got a crap load of it down here.
