Looking good 4est!

JSM,

I started the first bow swap last year. I had exactly 3/4 of a bow and several broken sticks under my belt.

Last year my trade bow was a boo backed jatoba that turned out pretty good with the help of the Gang. I have built several good shooters since.

The trade went so good last year we decided to do it every year and every one is welcome.

look forward to having you in next year.

Nice, 4est.
You mentioned that you left the tips a little wide in case you decide to flip'em. Is it best to leave the tips thicker and wider for adding a little recurve?  I'm working on an osage selfbow but can't flip because of knots close to the tips. I've also thinned and narrowed them already. "Horse before the cart" sort of thing.
I've not tried heat bending or heat treating yet.
Good work,
Stan

Alrighty then, finally getting the ball rolling and I'm getting excited.  Holding the boo shavings in my hands last night really flipped the switch.

Ipe? -- Check.
Boo? -- Check.
Smoothon? -- Check.
Form? -- Check.
Hot Box -- Up next.

I'm trying something new (although it's all new to me).  But I have enough stuff for 3 attempts.

Best part is the lady of the house is leaving for the west coast on Friday and I should be able to fit in lots of unsupervised bow building time!

WOW! came home yesterday to a really tall package leaning against my front door.  Didn't much look like the arrow shafts I was waiting for.  To my great suprise my swap bow had arrived. I am now the proud owner of a John Sweka longbow.  John the bow is beautiful and shoots great.  I couldn't be happier.

Burnt - I'm glad you like it.  I look forward to seeing the results of your October hunt with Stiks.  In the mean time, how about posting some full draw pics when you get a chance.

I finished up my trade bow tonight.  It has a few coats of thunderbird curing as we speak.  Its a 3 piece take down recurve, black glass, everything else is green mountain camo....pics coming mid week.

Well, I guess I only had to go back a few pages and refresh which bow John built.  Wonderful.  Still need to see burnt post some at full draw.

4est trekker

Howdy, folks.  Here's an update on my trade bow. I flipped the tips just a tiny bit using the kerf technique (i.e. I resawed the last several inches of the limb and glued in a thin rosewood lamination while inducing reflex).  I than added rosewood tip underlays and overlays.  I haven't yet roughed in the handle.

It's shown at my full draw, which is still 2" short of the recipient's.  It's also going to come out smack dab at the bottom end of the recipient's requested weight.  I would have liked about 3-5# on this one, but I think it will do just fine.  After working it in to the recipient's full draw and shooting it a bunch at my draw length the tips are about dead even after unstringing, settling to about 1/2" of reflex when relaxed.  Not perfect, but I'm a-okay with it.  I've turned the final full draw picture sideways and cropped it so you can get a better look.  Thanks!

Top limb is on top here:
