Walnut works really well Goose.........Art

This is a walnut tip underlay I used to strengthen the reflex in this hickory bow.

Pat that looks awesome. Does that also create a static tip effect?

Goose:  I've used underlays on recurved tips several times and love the effect.  It really helps to keep 'em stiff and can help repair a damaged belly.  It doesn't have to be very thick.  Here's an example:

"Walk softly...and carry a bent stick."

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God the Father through him."  Col. 3:17

Pat thanks for the picture and 4est I know I've seen that picture before because I might covet that bow  :D .

I bent the other tip this morning and what was a 45 minute job with the other became an hour and thirty minutes with this one.  I went in even smaller increments and basically did what I did last time in double the time.  I did see less lifts but I did notice a few.

When you guys did the overlays on the belly did you just rip them out on a bandsaw to the angle of the bend or heat them in the same caul for the desired bend?  I'm thinking I can get close with my bandsaw on the angle and make any adjustments with a sander.  Let me know if I barking up the wrong tree.

Goose I really hope it holds that thing is going to be awesome braced.

You can use either method Goose. Bend your overlays on your form or scribe-in/fit a larger piece and shape to liking.......Art

So I tried to scribe-in a couple of pieces and my bandsaw work... needs work.  You can see the gaps even after sanding.  Definitely needs some fixing but my question is now what would be the best way to get a flush bond for the glue?  I had some walnut leftover that I'll try to steam into the form.  When I sanded out the lifts there is a dip in the osage from the cracks.  Not sure how walnut will take steam but I'm willing to try.

I'm all up for suggestions or putting up someone at my house for a day (wife willing) to walk me through static recurves.  Anyone going to OJAM willing to teach a willing participant how to make a static recurve?

On a positive note I've got a couple of Junior High students coming over tomorrow to build a couple of board bows.  Preglued the handles for them.  We will see how it works out  :D

You just have to take your time and fit as best you can Goose. Urac-185 is close in color to walnut, got any of that? Art

Goose Gossett

Thanks Art that's all I needed to hear.  Wasn't sure if I was going at it the right way or not.  Urac-185 is on my need to purchase list anywhoo.  Thanks.

Several 1/8" thin slats will conform to almost any curve.

I glued it up last night. Here it is sanded to width and ready for overlays. With any luck it will be shooting tomorrow. Wenge and zebra riser with quilted maple limbs.

Thanks guys.I really like the Wenge and quilted maple,I don't think I can bring myself to put a leather wrap on this one. If it comes out too light I get to keep it for myself.
