i dont have experience with tru-oil but from what i know it is similar to tung oil. tung oil doesnt have filling properties, it simply penetrates the wood, and successive coats build up on the initial coat. if the wood or whatever youre applying it to is grainy it would take many coats to fill, making it better to use something else to fill the grain first. tru oil works great on skins, as does tung oil. when i do mine with tung oil i scotch brite or steel wool in between coats, if the skins have a lot of the little nibs on the scales i sand lightly with some fine grit sandpaper until theyre gone enough for the tung oil to be smooth. with about 10 coats of tung oil they shine like glass, very good results. the stuff i use isnt pure tung oil its "tung oil finish" which is just tung oil mixed with a thinner. i think tru-oil is polymerized.

Tru-oil will fill the grain on osage with 4 heavy coats.

walmart has it in their sporting goods dept and some ace hardware stores carry it

The walmarts in Alabama no longer carry Tru-oil

Wal-Mart, Academy Sports, Cabela's, Bass Pro, Gander Mountain........

I have gotten it from all of these.

Birchwood-Casey actually makes a grain filler for use specifically before Tru-Oil.

Yup-got mine from Cabela's after not being able to find it elsewhere.  With 4 finger applied coats, it had a very high gloss shine-0000 steel wool between coats.

But...once you open it up to use it...it wants to sort of gel up after it sits awhile....this is because air has been introduced to it...to help preserve it...after using some of it tighten the lid as tight as possible and turn it upside down to prevent anymore air from getting into it....I also put the bottle in a container of some kind...just in case there's any leakage...usually there isn't though....

I only buy the 4oz bottles anymore. Got a bigger one once and ended up throwing it away after it began to gel. I like to pour a small amount into a small clean container(like a jar lid) and seal the original container. If any is left over in the lid I let it dry there and DO NOT pour it back in the bottle.
  Most sporting good stores have Tru-Oil. I buy mine from a local gun shop but have gotten it from Walmart before. I don't think our Walmart carries it anymore.

If you guys are buying large quantities of finish and having it gel or just go bad, try Bloxygen.  I have had a bottle of it for about ten years.  I cannot remember where I got it, or if it is still made, but it works great.  I think it might be compressed nitrogen, it comes in a large spray can and you just give it a spray under the lid and it keeps varnish and oils indefinitely.  I have dip tubes full of spar varnish and tung oil that I filled about ten years ago and they are still fine.  You might be able to find it on the web.
