Howdy all, My pyramid is ready to go on the tiller tree and wanted to know if backing before tillering is better or is after? Or does it matter?
last bow I did I backed it after and it didnt seem to change anything. Only reason I am really concern is because this is my first bow from a stave. So I have been moving gingerly with this project.

Thanks in advance!

I would back before and then tiller

backing before tillering is best because you add material to the bow when you back it. This can subtly affect tiller or dramatically affect it if the backing is something substantial like wood or glass.
-How to make a bow-
Step one: Make a pile of shavings.
Step two: Shoot your new bow!

If I am backing a bow for protection I like to do it after floor tiller stage and before I stress the bow while tillering. If I'm backing a bow for looks I wait until it is done and shot in just incase I run into a problem I don't want to waste the decorative backing.
For wood and boo backing I pre tiller the belly first so I can add reflex to the to the stave at glue-up.

Hey thanks for the advice fellas, its much appreciate it.

What are your thoughts on a all raw hide backing?

Pat B

For protection rawhide is the best. IMO ...but it won't keep a bad bow together. Nothing will!

If I am to back a bow, I back after long string tillering. Jawge

Is it white wood? if you are going to heat treat, do it before backing. You can't flip the tips on it either once you glue on a backing.

Are you gluing in reflex? then floor tiller, glue it up and then tiller on the tree.

Are you backing for protection? then you need it while tillering.
