Hi guys,
First time poster, been reading and watching your posts and buildalongs for more than a year.I have a question about sanding on fiberglass lam bows.Do you have any special techniques for sanding the overlays on the handle without getting to deep? How deep is to deep? How much should you sand the fiberglass, before finishing?Maybe some pretty dumb questions, but I haven't been able to find much on it in the buildalongs.

Thanks

Jason Kendall

Sand the overlays until they are feathered in, try not to get into the glass to much but a little shouldnt hurt anything.

As long as the gloss surface is sanded off the glass it will be ready for the finish.

Thanks for the reply Jason.

I'm always nervous about getting into the glass near the nock overlays.  I'l get close with file or sander, then I put a piece of plastic strapping tape across the glass next to the end of the overlay.  I use a small convex file to get the overlay down and I can't see through the file - so the tape lets me know exactly where I am.  You can tell by the sound too, different on the glass than on the wood or phenolic - but I don't like that sound.  I usually replace the tape 2 or 3 times until I have it where I can sand it and can't feel the edge of the overlay.

i round the ends of the handle overlays and then bevel them into each other before the go on.  bevel the front edge of your tip overlays.  I always use smooth on when gluing overlays because it blends easier and turns clear when sprayed. i wipe off the excess glue once everything is clamped, that saves on sanding.  fiberglass is pretty tough dont sweat going to deep just take your time.
