Marty, How come your work bench looks so much neater than mine? Maybe I don't work on it enough and it just keeps collecting.

Great job on the build along, can't wait till you build mine. Really like the cedar, glad I went with that for my limbs. As always good stuff!

You make demanding process to look like a easy one - have you tried to make pressure to the lams with a air hose? Those bands seem to me like better way?

Allright guys, I'm back on this one!

Never tried the air hose, yet.  Initially it seemed too complicated and expensive, so I went the rubber band method. I've since worked the kinks out of that, and have enjoyed some sucess with it.  I may switch to air hose as I build new forms, but am not sure.  I can wrap one in rubber in ten minutes and can't make any better glue lines, so I may stay with what I know.  I think it inspires the new bowyers.

It has been cold, and I have been shopping for heaters.  I bought a 18,000 BTU model that wouldn't quite heat my double garage shop.  I just want to get it around 65 or so for glue-ups and spraying finish.  I finally went and bought a 30,000-50,000 BTU model that is used for construction sites.  It will warm my garage up from 40 deg to 70 deg in an hour on the low setting.  It eats up the oxygen though, so I have to be careful.  Luckily my garage door has about an inch of space all the way around and gets good/bad ventilation.

I did this glue up a week or so ago and had a set back.  I heated the smooth-on in the microwave oven to thin it out some.  I got it too hot!  It started to act really strange while spreading on the second piece.  The tub of epoxy should have been cooling off at this point, but was gettig hotter!  It started to gell on me, and was a solid blob within minutes!  Lesson learned.  I sent Kenny M and urgent request for new materials and he got them to me asap.  I will hopefully get this one layed up tonight.

Stay tuned!

Apex, was it you who was going to do a thread on how you do your limb tips?

Russell S.

marty i dont know if you ever used a resin pipe patch kit back in your day or if it was just a submarine thing...  anyways it was a 2 part resin with glass cloth...  i figured out if i mixed it in the engine room (90F)  it did something very similer i smoked a couple of batchs before i figured out i actually needed to cool the resin down before i mixed it.  the navy stopped carrying it on submarines, to bad...  i fixed alot of stuff with those kits!!

Marty,

Nice Build!  Sorry to hear about the glue blob.  DId that one myself by warming some smooth on in the hot box for a few minutes.  I figured I had  few minutes to post on the web site about the build.  Forgot about the glue for 20 minutes.  OOPS!

Good luck with the heater!  I throw a couple of sleeping bags on the hot box to keep the temp up during the winter.

Yes, I already did the tip-a-long Roy.  Search my handle.

We had those patches Russ, but I never played with them.

Kenny the ERC looks great!  I forgot all about the persimmon until just now when I read your post.  No biggie.  I'll be ordering again soon.  Just hold on to it, and I'll try and remind you next time.
