Nick,  Great work, great use of your tools and keep it coming.

limbcracker

Nice work Nick! I like that limb shape, did you use a tapered lam or are they all parallel?

dutchwarbow

thanks guys!! I would love to come over to mojam!! but I could get myself a 'real' beltsander, and a nice bandsaw for the same price as the ticket  ;)  I've been to NY once, and it was a great experience. It wouldn't be the last time I visit The USA!

limbcracker, I handtapered them a little on my beltsander, but that's about it. Sorry!

got her to 28" and did some risershapeing!

Man, guy...you build some beautiful bows.     :clapper:      :clapper:     I like how you stick to wood.  How did you get into bowbuilding being from the Netherlands?  Awesome stuff, guy.  Keep 'em coming.

4est, Rick and Chuck,

thanks for your kind words!

my grandfather bought me TBB1 when I was 11, and later bought me TBB2, 3, 4...
That's the way I started. Thanks to my Grandfather.

my grandfather has always been my example to follow. As one of the most succesfull post-ww2 officers in the german army (my mother is from germany, father from the Netherlands), as a really kind person, as a athlete, and sa a great supporter in my hobbies, as my hero.

Indeed, I use TB3 for my glueups! good guess  ;)

my usual drawlength is 31 1/2" (for my favorite warbow, the 125#), but for normal bows it's around 28-29", depending on the drawweight.

If only my budget wasn't so tight I would love to join you guys at mojam. Even If I had to promise not to make bows at that very event  :)

school is nothing but my entrance to university, and then 'corps mariniers' (the dutch navy seals), or directly to the 'corps mariniers'.

but as I'm in the highest level of highschool education (we have several levels in the Netherlands), it's still pretty tough.

more updates later this week.

Great to hear your story Nick. your grandfather sounds awesome and you are making Him proud I am sure. If you ever make it to MOJAM you have to promise TOO make bows, thats what it is about.
Take care and keep it up. ALL of it.

Nick your work is just amazing.  How on earth do you figure out what kind of poundage you're going to end up with when you build these?

Menards, HD and Lowes don't sell lumber like you're using that I know of, other wise I'd be stopping down tomorrow to make mess out in the garage.

Very inspiring, keep it up!

OH Longbow

Amazing...just amazing.  The bow is bending perfectly.

guys, I'm flattered, I don't know what to say.

wihill, I had to spend a long day to get the wood, as it was a 2hour drive to the lumberyard, a 1hour drive to the mill, and a 2hour drive to the place that sells the boo. From that, it's a 2.5hour drive back to my home  ;)  Not really lowes-lumber eh !

the poundage... I just use the dimensions from similar bows, but a 1/16" thicker or so. Thin enough to keep the glued-in profile, but thick enough to get the desired drawweight.

Today I finished this bow. I started with narrowing the outterlimbs, than I cleaned/sanded files and 60grit sandpaper, continued with 100, then 180, 400grit. For the grooves, I use a roll of sandpaper (see pic). After that, my bow was ready for the superglue finish.

With my hand in a plastic bag, holding the supergluetube between 2fingers, and using another for spreading it out. Only spread the glue once it's very liquid, otherwise hardened glue on the bag will stick onto the finish. Wich is ugly  :)

After this, the bow shines litteraly. But the finish won't be perfectly even. Sanding it with 100, 180, 400, and then 600grit will dull the finish. polishing the bow with woodcurls really makes the finish stand out, making it look like a mirror surface.

This was only my second attempt at superglue-finishing a bow, and I hope you like it. Any advice is welcome!!
