I have an osage sinew backed with snakeskins bow that I'm down to applying the finish on. All the other bows I have built I have used poly uerathane on. It's OK but nothing I'm really impressed with. Do you guys have any suggestions for a more durable waterproof finish that would be compatible with all my surfaces?

I've used a lot of finishes on bows and have settled on tru-oil, for it's ease of coverage and durability. The only finish that could possibly be better is a 2 part epoxy like Thunderbird, but for one bow it can be a little pricey. A glass bow I'd prolly use Fullerplast.

I used a combination of tung oil and varnish mixed with mineral spirits on my first BBO. Early coats had more mineral spirits to get better wood penetration. I let each layer get slightly tacky then I wiped off the excess. 24 hour dry time then I rubbed it with steel wool before applying next coat. I got impatient and only applied about 4 coats. six or 8 would probably be better. I've been happy with the finish. Got caught in the rain many times over the season and it held up well. A wood working friend recommended it because you could add coats without having to strip old layers so each season, I can just add a few more coats.

Like Dano, I prefer Tru-Oil too. I apply it with a finger. A good even coat then a light buffing with 0000steel wool before the next coat. Four to 5 coats will do the job. The Tru-Oil finish comes out high gloss so for hunting bows I add a quick spray of satin poly to dull the finish.
