I am wondering what type of leather I need to make a pocket quiver?  I know nothing about leather, so please let me know what all needs to be done.

Will deer hide work?  I have some that I tanned myself.

You will need a heavier leather than deer.  The best for your project will be a 7-8 oz veg tan leather.

thank you Jhawk.  I was beginning to wonder if i was going to get a reply.  Is there a place that you would recommend buying this from?  Are there any local stores that carry leather of this grade?

Tandy leather supply is where I have been getting my stuff. Super fast shipping. They will have what you are after. If you don't want that much, find a leather/saddle maker close by and see if they won't sell you a few large scrap pieces.

You'll notice the "luckiest" elk hunters have worn out boots.
