I started to try and figure out this Hammond thing couple weeks ago ,we are making progress ,but still got a ways to go.
The little hunter was first .forged W-2
5" blade , stabilized cedar,stainless
The Bowie I just finished today
Little over 9.5" blade, forge W-2
sheep horn,stainless,the hammond is more active but not really what I am after.
Oh yea Sarpend front clip ,first time for that ,it is wicked.   :scared:Here are some bad pictures but think you guys get the idea

Those look really great Kevin.
What are you using for the polish?
I usually clean of the oxides with a mag polish, and then finish with a loose abrasive, normally 4F pummice.

One question, what does hammond do, what is its purpose??

Hey thanks Ben, Mothers Mag Polish is what I used this time.

David I am new to this ,so instead of me saying something, I will let others tell you.

It simple terms, the "Hamon" is an un-hardened section of the blade that increases the toughness. In most modern knives it is done just as much for comsmetics.

The mag polish works great Kevin. Do you have any loose abrasive? Let me know, I can send you a zip loc bag full to play with if you like.

Looking good Kevin. As hard as they are to develope they are just about as hard to photograph. I like the effect of a nice Hamon.

Like stated the effect is the appearance the affect is the differential hardening that gives the blade the toughness.

Very pretty knives. The sheep horn handled knife reminds me of something Doug Campbell might produce -- and that is a compliment of the HIGHEST order!
