I've got two springs of 5160 with 1 and 3/4" coils.
They are brand new.
They're BIG.
Imagine what you could get out of 1 3/4" round when forged to the dimension of your choosing.  
Calculator says these weigh 300 pounds.
Lots of steel these days goes for 3-4-5 dollars a pound.
I'll sell these BOTH for 2 bucks a pound.
I know where they came from. I know who made them.
They were off spec for their designed application and were scrapped. (They were actually designed for the springs in the bottom of hydraulic cylinders!)
I will only list these for a few weeks.
Then, I'm going to do something else with them.
(That picture was taken about 8 years ago. The springs are a little rusty now. I'm heavier - the springs are not.)

I remember that photo from a long time ago and thought then, as I do now, that thing is awesome.  I am thinking a custom steel work table in the shop - or even a really cool dining room table using the hot rivet gun to attach trim to the table top but dang, I  think I would need to add joists in the basement!!  Not to mention the fork truck doesn't fit through my doorway.

If you don't mind I will download this pic and show my buddy who owns the fab shop I work in.  He is always looking for a new project.

Karl, If you cut a length off to hammer into one of your hunter knives, How long would that length need to be?

5/8-3/4 inch would be my guess. That's some serious steel.

1" long would weigh .682 pounds, or about 11 ounces. I just today had a piece of W2 that weighed 13 ounces, forged a 4 3/4" hunter with tang drawn out and had considerable steel left over.

Thank You Lin and Karl. I remember a picture Lin posted last year of a little slug of steel that turned into a sweet little knife. When I saw that spring I thought "Man, there is a pile of blades in that thing".
That could keep a fella busy for awhile, and at about $1 per/slug, seems like a good price for material.

By the way Karl, I wish you would have come 20-30 feet down the row at Comptons and said HI, I would have like to meet you. That knife you made Scott is real nice.

Good luck with the sale. You bladesmiths get some cool stuff.

I've forged a couple of pretty hefty 10" bowies from 1 1/2" X 2" dia stock. When you start drawing it out there's a bunch of steel there. And it's so much fun!!    

Recon you could put one of those on the back of you motorscooter and bring it out Karl...
