I was considering getting into some leather work.  Sheaths, arm guards, tabs, and who knows.  What are some of the tools needed and a ballpark cost of these items.

It can totally depend on what you want to get.  Just like with most things, sometimes you get what you pay for.  A lot of folks start out getting stuff from Tandy Leather and some of it is certainly serviceable as far as tools go.  There are also different styles of tools that do similar things, just depends on how you like to get it done.  I'm fortunate and have a guy who really knows leather and tools just down the road from me.  If you have any idea if someone near you has done some leather work, I'd do what I could to pick his brain and maybe even watch him do some projects.  Then you can get a better idea of what all you're looking at.  Good luck-leather work can be really fun.
