INFO: Trad Archery for Bowhunters



440c stainless

would someone tell me how to harden 440c stainless steel with a kiln it  doesn't have a controller will just have to adjust tne temperature as i need to. i serfed the net to not much then high heat 1900 but didn't say for how long.  any help would be appreciated  thank you jackie

should read serfed the net it said to heat to 1400 and soak for how long it didn't say. then at 1850-1950 but didn't say how long. i'm guessing it would determine the size of the metal. this is for 3/32 to 1/4 inch knives  thank you jackie

This is from an old Texas knivemaker sheet:
440C S.S., 58RC, 1880F, 15min: 225F, 2 hrs. 1 time.  NOTE: These figures are based on 3/16" thick material and should be altered to the thickness of the material being treated. (I.E. 1/8" thick material should be 8 to 10 minutes and 1/4" material should be near 20 minutes). The rule of thumb is 1 hour per inch of thickness.
