I am so pleased with how this one is turning out.  I pounded it out of a Ford coil spring(most of my knifes come from the same set of coils) and I am really happy with it.  11.5" overall with an 8" blade and just over 1/16th thick where the blade meets the handle.  I was really worried that it would warp or worse - Crack, when it hit the quenching oil but it held up.  I still need to finish the handle a bit and put a finish on it and I think I will try to etch my initials on the blade with the tutoral above.  I made this one for a friend and just to keep it related to hunting - this one will be cutting a lot of venison in the kitchen.

I love it! Looks like it will make a great slicer.
Is the handle padauk?

I think so but I am not really sure?  I had a friend give me a few chunks of exotic woods and this is a dark redish orange until freshly cut and then it is a bright red/orange and the dust is very red/orange.  When I wet it the finish looks awesome and it smells like tropical hardwood when worked.

Nice knife! It looks a little wet up there in the back yard.

Very nice.  Makes my mouth water just thinking about all that venison it'll slice...  :)

Very nice!  Feel almost like a sashimi knife.

Bobby Urban

Thanks Merc - if it had a single bevel grind it would very much be a sushi knife.  I think I will try another like this with a single bevel and use it for sushi/sashimi.  I really need a better grinder to do it well though or at least fab up a better platten for the grinder I am using.  I have a really nice sashimi knife that was a gift and it is right handed so when I make my own I will be grinding it left handed.  This is going to a friend as a housewarming gift as soon as we finish building his home.

OconeeDan

That is very nice!
Yes, looks like padauk to me, it'll darken considerably with time.
