I started this knife last week. here are the steps.



here i am Cutting it out with a dremel tool. I have already been scolded about the lack of safety equipment i have a respirator and glasses now.





the scales are Rosewood, iwth a paduak and maple stripe, and tigerwood.

This is my first knife. i have put scales on one before but this will be the first from start to finish.




This is it after i cleaned it up and put the bevel on it. i got it pretty straight.

Ok so t tried finishing it tonight and I ran into a glitch. My epoxy didn't fully harden. It set for two days. I used loctite two part 60minute epoxy. Any advice or do I just need to use more hardener next time? I'll post pics later think this knife may be mine    the next one will go out with a bow it's going to be unique. Same scales neat shape.

I like a lot of Loctite products, but I wont use the epoxy. I have heard this same story too many times. It wont harden. It may be old from setting on the shelf, but I cant control that part. I just wont use it. I use Devcon or one of the commecial epoxies. Rakka is a good one.

If you can get your pins in and peined, you should be ok anyway. Grind them 1/16 long on each side and pein them. How hard and how tight depends on your handle material, etc. Lin

OK, Thanks! I'll make a note of that Lin. Thanks for the advice and support! Another thing i think may be affecting it is the cold and humidity we've had here lately as well.
I use LP to heat my house and it only runs at night when im actually home.

I looked at Lowe's and they did not have it. I get mine a True Value. Ace may have it too.

ok i'll probably have to order it online aint got either of those near here that i know of. I lack a little in the tool department so my knives are a little rough :/ I need help on hte bevel angles i think mine may be a little too steep.

i also lack in the workshop area. Currently i store my belt sander and bench grinder in my living room floor and carry it on the porch to work  :D  going to talk to my landlord soon though to see if i can fix that.

any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I love the work that shows up on here and I know it is going to take patience and elbow grease to get even close to the quality of work produced on this forum.

The epoxy from Dollar General hardens good like Devco and it is only a $1. I have used it quite a few times on scales, it is just the right ammount.

I use Devcon sometimes but it is always important to make sure it is exactly the same amount...maybe a smidge more hardener. I started using West System Marine epoxy which has plungers designed to give you the proper mix. The only problem with the West System is it mixes a good amount and if you don't need a lot then you waste some. West might come a way that you can mix smaller amounts.

i'm going to use tung oil to finish my knives i have one i have done this on but the finish is sticky

what process do yall use to shape your handles?

I use a belt sander to get them to the right thickness, then a dremel with a flap wheel to round the edges of the handle to where I feel it is comfortable.

what are some different handle finishes that yall use?

I use a 4x36 belt sander to do about 80% of my handle shaping. I use mostly stabilized woods but on bare wood I use a Danish Oil finish.

do you shape it before or after glueing it up?

Also, i have Tung oil but it worked great on my cocobola but on the Tigerwood and Rosewood it sucks.... Should i seal those with CA glue before i use the tung oil?
