This is my first try on one of these. I like it. Still have to make handle and get the handle hole in it . Thinking of a Ipe handle or osage. I know everyone does maple so I wanted something different.Still have to finish sand it and heat treat.<><

i think as long as you can find something with straight grain and not a lot of run out, you should be fine.  

Osage is a great idea.  I'm not sure about Ipe. It's probably too hard!

But anything with a lot of run out won't hold up too long, so look to your grain...  that's why I buy most of my handles for hawks.

Yeah it was fun. But would be alot more if I have the right style tongs for the job LOL.<><

i know what you mean. rr spikes are tough that way. On the next one, try upsetting the end that you are making into the blade into a big mushroom. I do this by getting the end real hot, putting in a vice with the just the hot part sticking out and hammering it down. This give you a lot more metal to spread the blade out wider.  That is only if you do want a wider blade...

I could have hammered it a little more for a wider blade. Next one will be wider. But gotta get the right gtongs to hold the buggers.Going try and mill the handle slot next week.<><

going to try and do oasge for the handle. gotta see if I have a long enough piece. If not its ipe.<><

made a cherry handle for an old hawk head and because of some runout it didn't last real long. Cherries wavy grain makes it tough to turn into a good handle. Would look good for a display hawk though.

Frank when you get one of these babies fine tuned and offer one up for sale or trade put me on the list buddy. I been wanting real bad for a long time and would just assume have one of yours as any.
