Evening all just wanted to throw a quuestion out to you all, kinda polling for opinions. Just started looking into and reading about Nessmuk and his trio of blades, I really like the look of the "nessie" style knife and have seen a few nice ones on this thread. My question is more about his hatchet choice. Want to know if anyone has any opinions, or experiences for feed back of a standard hatchet/ tomahawk vs. the Nessmuk double bit style. Again thank you for any information....matty

I believe that the single bit and double bit both have their place. I prefer a single with a hammer poll. That along with a camp knife will handle a lot of situations. I forged a small hammer poll today, but have to get the high carbon bit welded in and grind/HT it, so it might be a few days before I can photo it. Lin

My understanding of Nessmuk's choice of a double bit axe was so he could use one blade for "rough work" and keep the other edge sharp for "fine work".  Remember he did a lot of shelter building and wood working that most of us won't be doing in the woods.

Personally, I am with Lin and prefer a hammer poll.  I usually end up pounding things more than cutting things when I'm hunting or camping!

Yup, what they said.  I simply find a hammer poll too useful to justify having a "specialty" side of an axe bit....
