I've been looking at Jeremy's knife challenge for sometime.  Now that I'm caught up from St Judes & Bear Quest, I figured I'd better get started before salmon fishing occupies my time    :)

Here's what came in the box...8" piece of thick car spring, wood (walnut?), piece of copper tubing, square of brass, brass pin, and some electrical wire.  I am assuming, I have to use everything in the pile...that will be a challenge in it's self

The thick car spring is a devil to hammer out so thankfully my power hammer came to the rescue.  Stretched and thinned to 16 inches.  I cut off 9 inches to start a blade.

Here is first rough forge without any profile grinding.  AOL around 12 inches now.

Cleaned up the profile and flat ground the blade...but the handle needs some work as it seems too blocky for the curves of the blade.  Back to the grinder...Doc

Look'n good, cant wait to see how you use the rest of that material.

I didn't think the handle fit in with the curve of the blade and my piece of wood with pretty narrow so this is my final design.  Now just drilling for pins, quench, and temper blade.

Next piece of the puzzle, trying to use All the Parts in the package.  On to quenching...if it doesn't crack or warp, I just might be able to assemble a knife to slice tomatoes or hogs in Aiken next winter...Doc

Jeremy,  It was a fun project and indeed a challenge.  Thanks for the novel idea and the junk yard materials.

Stic,  Wood was too small to make a Big Honker...but it has a similar blade shape  :)     This one is still Bigger than what I'd normally use
