Is there any advanges other then looks to go to 2000 grit.I stop at 1000.  :confused:   2000

I think it depends on the material.Something like polished buffalo horn looks good taken to a high grit and buffed with white rouge but the buff probably makes more difference than anything after 1000.

In a practical sense, NO. In fact a good smooth, straight 500 grit finish will look better than a 1000 grit that is carelessly done. Some have said, and I am finding this to be true, that a very smooth finish resists rust a little better. Not by much, but I believe it to be true. Lin

wow 2000 would be just about mirror finish,  that lots of bench time.

I never take mine that far and if I was going to I would do the final steps on a buffer instead of with sandpaper.  2000 grit should definately be mirror finished.  I agree with Lin a really fine sanded finish or better yet mirrored finish is more rust resistant than a lower grit finish.
