I got the sheath in today that I'm going to use on my big knife. Settled on "The Buffalo Knife" for the name.

This sheath has rawhide on the outside over vegetable tanned leather inside. Made by Art Vincent Cedar Ridge Leather Products. Art said the Veg tan leather will not rust or choroid the steel blade. The stained rawhide has marks that look like it's been used on many hunts. I think the rawhide lacing adds to the old time look.

Art and I talked more on the sheath this afternoon. We're thinking about making the sheath so it can not only be worn on the belt at waist level, but by adding optional straps it could also be carried in a shoulder harness. This would be a great option for a big heavy knife, to be worn high under the arm out of the way yet still very accessible.....any thoughts?

Ron, I love the sheath and that big ole knife!  I'm sure it could handle any job!

I've seen sheaths carried the way you describe. If the sheath is somewhat snug so as not to allow it to slip out, you can position it close to horizontal with the handle slightly up. The harness will hold it to the body so it wont bang around. It will take some fitting but I think this would be a good way to carry such a large knife. I believe you are left handed, so the knife would ride under the right arm for access to the left hand? Lin

This is a knife I have that can be carried like you describe. The belt is through a loop on the lower portion of the sheath and a strap going over the shoulder holds the to top.

    That is the position exactly. That way the tip of the knife sheath is not really going to be poking the truck seat or what ever you're leaning against. I had Kenny Rowe (Rowe's Leather)come up with a similar carry for My G3 Camp Knife. So far, I have had oportunity to sell all of the knives with their sheath, but I will be keeping the carry belt and shoulder strap for the next knife. I always have one finished and one on the bench. A large knife has become important to me. I have to leave for a show in a few minutes, but will try to post a picture of mine soon.

Here's the new version of the sheath. It has a removable shoulder strap so you can wear it on your belt if so desired. It also has an additional belt loop at the bottom of the sheath if you need it to be more secure when wearing as a shoulder rig.

 

There's nothing at all wrong with that! But it's under wrong arm for you. This a nice system.

I should have another knife ready soon to show what I got. It's not any better than that though. Lin

Wow, Now thats how i want to carry my big knifes.And hold up my britches.                 Thanks Ron, Guess thats what it took to get me excited about working leather again.

Still tweaking the harness...      Here's the latest version and probably the last. I like this one. The broad "strap" that goes through the belt loop is notched at the top and that keeps the knife from shifting. The bottom loop is more substantial than the last one was. It may look kinda "busy" from the back side but you don't see that when you're wearing it.
