This is my first post on Trad Gang.  So far the knives I have seen are wonderful.  I just finished up my first one ever.  It is a Green River Works blade and curly maple scales.  I do not have many tools.  I used files, sandpaper, and a vice to do the work.  Now that it is finished, I wish I would have went with a darker stain to maybe get more of the curly maple to show.  Anyway, I have the bug and will be asking questions.  Thanks

Nice work... you can always go back and stain that Maple. What part of Wisconsin? I'm up near Bayfield...

I am in Cameron, south of Rice Lake.  I have two coats of varnish on the handle, would I have to sand it all down to restain it?

Nice job for sure!

yeah.. you would have to do that and it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Or you could just move on to the next one.  If it were me, I'd probably do it because I love the look of strong curly maple.  If you do it, make sure you tape up your blade really well and be carful sanding up in that area.
