I only have one knife with a gut hook on it, but would use it more if I could figure out a way to get the gut hook like it was when it was new.  I have tried a few things but to no avail.

How do you guys do it?

Thanks
Jake

A chainsaw file should get it sharp enough to do what's it's intended to do.  On the ones I've made I took it a step further and used a medium diamond stick.  If you want to polish it any more than that you'll have to buy slipstones.

The key, as with anything, is keeping the angle consistent.

That seems to be the hardest part, keeping the angle consistent.  I was thinking about trying a lansky type sharpener set up with a serrerated stone with the knife in the clamp backwards might help, but need the stone before I can try it.

(did that even make sense??)

I use a pencil with 150gr and then 240 and then 400 wrap ir around the pencil. Put knife in a vise and push the pencil away from yourself. It gets tham sharp for me.<><

I use a 5" angle grinder with a fine cutoff wheel.

Run it directly along the spine of the blade & that pesky guthook will pop clean off!

Problem solved  :goldtooth:

Interesting method indeed....sounds like it works for you...      :biglaugh:    Before I finished reading your post, you had me going..."you mean you really use a grinder????"  LOL

I really like your scent lok quote...priceless!

I should say a ROUND pencil. Not the ones with sides.<><

I use a little diamond rod that tappers down to a point...also good for serrated knives...and has a fish hook groove! LOL!
The problem is how do you KNOW they are sharp until you use them? LOL!
