Im sure this has been a topic before, but not since Ive been around here, so I was just wondering what everyone carries with them in the field.  I generally carry this one on my belt and have a small skinner in the pack.  Just figured it'd be good to share a few working knives that see a lot of field time.  

This was made by Lloyd Thompson, out of my home town of Pagosa Springs, CO...blade gets wicked sharp and holds an edge for a long time.  Lets see yours

First knife I made after a week with Ed Fowler.
It's been five years and I still wear it every day.
Dressed more deer than I kept track of.

Love that one!  Looks like a real work horse.  The Fowler ricasso always gives me the impression of strength.

Dang I hate to follow Karl!     His knives are exceptional and I b da newb! Nuthin but respect for his work!
But here it is a babbit file that holds a really good edge will cut tree limbs without more than a touch up on a stick. dress a doe that afternoon and home made to boot. For a poor countryboy Its alright. C-Yall Bob

I bought a file something like that at a yard sale last summer, but it was rounded.  No one seems to be able to tell what it's used for.  So, what IS it used for?

Yep, should have know us knife makers would post their own stuff mast.  It's usually the reason we start in the first place.  To get a better knife.  

Yep, I agree prarie.  Even Karl's early stuff was killer.

My goto is the first knife I ever made period.  30 years ago and I still carry it like it's one of my arms.  5" blade made from virgin W1 steel.  Walnut and bone handle and boy is it beat up!

Finished it 2 weeks before season and skinned 3 deer (all 180lb 8 pointers) in 2 days without touching it to a stone.  All taken out of my stand by my brother a neighbor and me I might add.  Just had to brag. ;~)

Anyway, this is it.
 

If you look close you can see my initials (JDB) carved into the bone oval in the handle.
 

I told you it was beat up.  Great knife, poor hammer.  Most of that damage is from my Thompson 54cal BP tang.  

Chiger thats what I had hoped would happen.  I see all these really pretty knives on here every day, I just wanted to see where the "beaters" were that everyone made and carried themselves.  I just havent gotten around to makin a suitable one to carry just yet, which is why mine isn't my own knife....soon enough though, im workin on it as we speak.

I never leave home without my Kershaw "Leek" clipped to my pocket, the other 2 are my hunting and field knives although I am now in the process of making a hunting knife from a saw blade.

Hey RonnieB They are used to file soft alloys.What I understand is that babbit bearings were (or are?)soft materials that would clog a normal file and had to be filed to fit.
What I do know is one file made 2 fine knives IMO C-Ya Bob!

Mine was made by our own "sticshooter" (where he been lately?)!  Beautiful Nessmunk style bowie.

The 3rd knife I made, I'll carry it this turkey season.  Old file in it's former life First try at wire inlay.  Handy little knife.  I made the sheath too.

IN GOD WE TRUST

This is what I currently wear hunting.  It has a beefy spine so plenty strong enough to dis-articulate (cut off) legs & heads.  Skins real well with semi rounded point.  Already on the 3rd paracord handle for odor control     I re-ground the blade to get a real thin edge...in doing so ground off my maker's mark.  Certainly not my prettiest knife..but she seems to do all the jobs OK.  tippit

By the way, forgot to say it's good to see another Blue Grasser on the Trad here.  There seems to be more of us around here than most forms.  Good to see.

The top knife is my "every thing outdoors knife" My favorite uncle made this knife for me almost 40 years ago. it is a Russel (Green River) Camp Knife blade. It was $3.85 at the time. This knife gets razor sharp. ( the spike was used as a ball starter for my muzzleloaders. )

The lower knife was made by a friend, lee Ferguson of Huntsville, AR. I wear it everyplace other than work.

The little orange knife is my go-to hunting knife. Nice & thin, without being too flexible, 2-7/8" blade & just about ideal for everything game-related.....

I can't think of anything you could not accomplish with that combo.
From Turkeys to Grizzlies!

This is one from A-2 and and elk horn that I killed with my recurve in Montana in 1980.  I've since made a new sheath for it but it's my go-to for sure.

The orange G10 handled knife.  Not too sexy, but works reallllly good.
