I call it my "Lewis Knife" because I got most of the parts from Lewis T.Brookshire III of these forums. It is my fourth knife, and first with this type handle (as opposed to all antler handles). Lewis and I recently engaged in a mutual trade of items we each wanted, that the other had. When I got my package, Lewis had included (most generously) a BH he had knapped, and a partially formed handle and blade blank for a knife for me to "play with". Needless to say, I was happier than a pig in a slop bucket.

The blade was an unsharpened blank made by none other than Daniel of the Far North. The handle was a rectangle of layered materials roughly shaped with a drop to the rear of the handle. The handle was a tad short for my unusually long hand so I added a piece of whitetail antler at each end. After asking Lewis a million questions (poor guy    :D   ), the pics are what I made of it. Thank you so much for nudging me into this project, Lewis. I'm pretty pleased with the outcome. The blade still requires some work but UPS says my knife making book is slated for delivery today (yippee), so I think that will help me there. The OA length is 6" and the blade is 2 5/8". I just rounded the main part of the handle a small amount but rounded and shaped the ends considerable. I'll tell more about the materials below the pics:

 

 

Main part of the handle I believe (because I did a riser with some like it) is Brazillian Cherry, the small chip either end of the red wood is Spaulted Peach wood (stabilized), the black and white layers are unknown syntetics Lewis got from a friend's work place, and of course the antler pieces at either end I cut, stabilized, and epoxied on, then I sanded and rounded them off. The front one was then pinned by the blade tang (epoxied) but I went ahead and pinned the back one also by epoxying a 8x3/4" brass bolt through the layers of materials. The finish is acetone thinned epoxy, oversprayed with Polyeurathane. Too many details? (Sorry, trying to fix it all in my feeble ol' mind for future referance -    :p   )

Varmint, someone (I forget who now but one that I knew has a lot of experience) on this forum said just the other day to do all antler used in handles that same way also (Thin super glue), for strength and sandability, and it made sense to me so I did it on those two pieces before I glued them on. Sure made it sand nice.
